Commentary
And when Musa was the first one whom Allah mentioned by their names, through his tongue in the Torah, and He manifested their praises, and made their virtues known, and this was inherited by their children from him until their matter became widespread and famous, and filled the ears, and spread in the lands, until it reached the plains and the seas, he followed the mention of them with His mention by saying: ﴿And mention in the Book﴾ (p-211) meaning the one for which there is no book like it in perfection ﴿Musa﴾ meaning the one whom Allah saved by him the Children of Israel from servitude and humiliation until they were able to attain the legacy of their forefathers. And he was in agreement with his father Ibrahim, blessings be upon them, in that each of them was wanted by the king of his time, who claimed divinity, to be killed out of fear for his kingdom from him. So Allah saved him from him, and the matter of Musa is more astonishing because He, glorified and exalted is He, saved him from slaughter by the slaughterer. Then He explained His mention of him by saying: ﴿Indeed, he was﴾ meaning an ancient existence in him ﴿sincere﴾ [to Allah, the Most High -] in his monotheism and all his actions [- as indicated by the reading of the majority - without any burden in anything, in that -] because Allah made him sincere for Him as in the reading of the Kufans with the opening ﴿And he was a messenger﴾ to the Children of Israel and the Copts ﴿a prophet﴾ whom Allah informs of what He wants from His revelation to inform those sent to them, and by that he raises his status. Thus, the mention of prophethood about him occurred twice: one of them is within “a messenger” and the other explicitly with the understanding of the elevation by deriving it from prophethood, and the fact that the news is not usually attributed to him except for a great report. So the intended meaning is: a messenger of high status who informs of great news, and in it is a refutation of what might be assumed that he is a messenger from some of His messengers as in the companions of Yasin; and he added to that his evidence indicating what the surah was prefaced with from mercy, so He had mercy on him by comforting his solitude and preparing for his estrangement by sweetening him with the address and giving him the Book (p-212) and he said:
