Commentary
And when he saw from his father and his companions what he saw, he resolved to spread the distance of separation, choosing for the estrangement in the land over the estrangement of the opposites. So he was as [Imam] Abu Sulaiman al-Khattabi, may Allah have mercy on him, said: "And the estrangement of a person in the distance of separation is not, but by Allah, in the absence of form. And indeed, I am a stranger between a garden and its people, even if my family is in it and my kin are therein." And he fulfilled what he resolved upon; then Allah, glorified and exalted is He, clarified the realization of his hopes and the response to his supplication, saying: ﴿So when he separated himself from them﴾, meaning by migration to the sacred land, ﴿and what they worship﴾, meaning continuously, ﴿besides Allah﴾, the One who encompasses all meanings of greatness that should not be worshipped besides Him. ﴿And We granted﴾, meaning due to what We have of greatness, ﴿to him﴾, as is the case with everyone who leaves something for the sake of Allah, ﴿Isaac﴾, a son for him from his wife, the barren and sterile, after she had passed the age of despair and he himself was at an age where one does not give birth to one like him. ﴿And Jacob﴾, a son for Isaac, and He specified both of them (p-210) with mention due to their being the place of his residence and their standing after his death, unlike his other children. As for Ishmael, peace be upon him, Allah, glorified and exalted is He, was the one who took care of his upbringing after he was moved as an infant to the Sacred Mosque and revived with him those great rituals. [So he delayed him in mention, making him a foundation at the head of it]; then he stated [what He granted] to his children as a reward for his migration, saying: ﴿And We made﴾, meaning from both of them, ﴿a prophet﴾, of high status, and he informs of the news as We made Ibrahim, peace be upon him, a prophet.
