Commentary

And when he alerted him to the fact that what he worships does not deserve worship, and that his worship is not permissible due to its absolute deficiency, and then its deficiency in relation to its worshiper, and that the object of worship cannot be less than the worshiper at all, the least he could reach with that was the state of confusion. He alerted him that he is worthy of guidance. He said, repeating his previously mentioned description with affection and kindness: 'O my father.' He confirmed, knowing that he denies that his son knows anything better than him, saying: 'Indeed, I have received knowledge from the true object of worship that has not come to you. So follow me.' That is, it has resulted from this that I say to you, as an obligation to forbid the wrong and as advice for the right that you have over me: Strive to follow me. 'I will guide you to a straight path' in which there is no deviation. Just as if I were with you on a tangible path and I informed you that ahead of us are perils from which no one can escape, and I commanded you to take a different path, you would obey me. If you disobeyed me in it, everyone would consider you misguided.
