He said, substituting from 'Ibrahim': (when he said) meaning remember the time of his saying (to his father) guiding him from the abyss of misguidance by the worship of idols, seeking to soften him in every phrase by saying: (O my father).
And when the rational person does not act except for the fruit of his action, he alerted him to the futility of his action by saying: (Why do you worship?) intending by the questioning to be polite, gentle, kind, and to have beautiful manners in advising him, revealing the matter to the utmost clarity by saying: (what does not hear and does not see) meaning he has no capability for anything of these two descriptions to see what you are in of serving him or to respond to you if you call him, whether immediately or eventually. And when the blind and deaf may benefit from speech or otherwise, he said: (and will not avail you anything) from the availing.
