Commentary

And when that scene was of great gathering, intense crowding, level ground, and distant corners, their state necessitated that they not be exposed to anything other than what is near to them of its horrors. So he said in response to one who says: And what might they hear or see therein, informing that their state in the intensity of hearing and sight is worthy of admiration: ﴿Hear them and see﴾ meaning how intense is their hearing and how keen is their sight! ﴿On the Day they come to Us﴾ hearing all its horrors, seeing all its states, so they will be exposed thereby to all that their deeds in this world led to their harm on that Day, and all that would have benefited them had they done it. They will regret at a time when regret will not benefit them, and they will wish for the impossible of returning to the world and similar things to make amends, but they will not be answered to that. Rather, they will be led by it into everything that harms them, destroys them, and brings them down, so they will be in following that - while they know its harm - blind, mute, and deaf, because they do not benefit from their faculties as they did in the world. Thus was the original state, but he made clear and said: ﴿But the wrongdoers﴾ as a reminder of the description that brought them to that state ﴿Today are in clear error﴾ [they -] do not hear nor see.
