Commentary
Then it indicated the truth of his being the son of Maryam and no one else by his saying in response to those who have gone astray: ﴿What was﴾ meaning what is correct, nor can it be conceived in minds, nor is it correct, nor can it be conceived because it is impossible for it to necessitate a need ﴿for Allah﴾ who is free from all things ﴿to take﴾. And since the context requires a general negation, he emphasized it with 'from' saying: ﴿from a child﴾.
And since taking a child is among the deficiencies, he referred to that with the general glorification by saying: ﴿Glorified is He﴾ meaning He is free from all deficiency, whether it be a need for a child or otherwise. Then he explained that by saying: ﴿When He decrees a matter﴾ meaning any matter ﴿He only says to it 'Be'﴾ meaning He wills it and links His power to it ﴿and it is﴾ without any need for anything at all. So how can it be attributed to needing procreation, childbirth, and upbringing gradually as indicated by the taking.
