So she indicated in compliance with what she was commanded to do to him [meaning 'Isa, to speak to him so that he may respond to her]. They said, 'How can we speak to one who is in the cradle?' [meaning] before your indication [to him] as a child who has not yet reached the age [of this speech], [which only the wise elders or rather the prophets say]. The expression 'was' indicates that at the time of her indication to him, they did not need to speak to him. Rather, when he heard the conversation and the indication was completed, a saying emerged from him that is extraordinary for the nature of infants [and children]. It is possible that it was complete, indicating his ability at a time before the age of speech, and the mention of 'child' is in the accusative case [indicating the state].
