Commentary

﴿And shake towards you﴾ means to cause the shaking, which is a pulling by movement. When the intended purpose was to terrify in order to divert her thoughts from the distress that had befallen her, it was made limited. It was as if she said: What should I shake? Since there was nothing in the trunk that could be expected to be beneficial by shaking it. So he said, explicitly mentioning the shaken: ﴿With the trunk of the palm tree﴾ [which you are under, along with its dryness and the fact that the time is not the time for its bearing]. It was as if she said: And why is that? So he said: ﴿It will drop upon you﴾ from its top ﴿fresh, ripe dates﴾, another great sign that pleases the soul and dispels the sadness, and indicates safety. The expression in the form of mutual action [in the reading of the congregation and Hamzah] indicates that the dates fall from it. It is his right that it be negated, as she is not qualified for that. It is evident that it is in a miraculous manner. The reading of the congregation with the assimilation indicates that, despite its intensity, it almost conceals its existence from her due to its dryness and her lack of inclination. The reading of Hamzah with the opening and softening indicates the ease of its falling and its abundance. The reading of Hafs from Asim with the vowelization and the breaking of the qaf from the doer indicates abundance and that it is evident in being from her action.
