Commentary
'And he called her from beneath her.' And it is 'Isa, peace be upon him. 'Do not grieve.' Al-Razi said in Al-Lawa'ih: 'The most correct view is that the duration of her pregnancy with him and his birth was an hour, because he was created uniquely, and he was not from a drop that circulates in the stages of creation.' This has been conveyed by Ibn Kathir, who said: 'It is strange from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both. It is supported by the fact that it has not been reported in our Book nor from our Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, that they denied the time of the pregnancy. If they had known of it, they would have denied it. If they had denied it, it would have been transmitted as the denial of the birth has been transmitted.' And when they denied the birth, it was as if she said: 'Why should I not grieve?' And she anticipated what he would explain to her. He said: 'Indeed, your Lord has made beneath you a stream in this land where there is no flowing water, a stream of pure water, a sign for you that will soothe your soul.'
