Commentary

And when the essence of the story is that he is a boy whom Allah, the Most High, brought forth from a cause that is, in its weakness, close to non-existence. As for him, reaching a certain age and a state in temperament that does not normally accept the act of intercourse, and as for his wife, due to her despair of reaching such an age because she is barren and has never accepted a pregnancy, he followed it with a story that is stranger than his story, as it contains only one cause, which is the woman. In it, the cause of masculinity is completely absent. This indicates that He, the Most High, creates what He wills sometimes by a strong cause, sometimes by a weak cause, and sometimes without a cause. Whoever is like this is self-sufficient regarding offspring. And when it was upon the Jews who were commanding the questioning out of stubbornness about the stories of the Companions of the Cave and Dhul-Qarnayn to advise the Arabs by informing them that their religion is false due to their polytheism, and they did not do so, they were deserving of reprimand. The story of Zakariya is greater in reprimanding them due to their direct involvement in killing him and killing his son Yahya, peace be upon them. He presented it in mention as a prelude to the matter of 'Isa, peace be upon him, as previously explained in [Al-Imran], to compel them to acknowledge him, and for the Christians to acknowledge that he is a servant, just as each of them acknowledged the matter of Yahya, peace be upon him. This is due to what brought them together in breaking the norm. The story of Yahya is more deserving than the story of Ishaq, peace be upon them, for the reasons mentioned, and for witnessing those who differed regarding 'Isa, peace be upon him, from both groups concerning his matter and the matter of Yahya, peace be upon them, due to their union in time along with their close kinship. And when the story of 'Isa, peace be upon him, was the strangest, he indicated this by changing the context and said, 'Mention this to them: ﴿And mention in the Book, Maryam﴾, the daughter of 'Imran, the maternal aunt of Yahya - as in the authentic narration. From the hadith of Anas ibn Malik [from Malik ibn Sa'sa'a al-Ansari, may Allah be pleased with them both, in the hadith of Isra]: 'So when I was freed, I saw Yahya and 'Isa, and they are cousins.' Then he replaced ﴿Maryam﴾ with a replacement of inclusion by saying: ﴿When﴾, meaning mention what happened to her when ﴿she withdrew﴾, meaning she made herself undertake to separate and isolate ﴿from her people﴾ in a state ﴿of a place eastern﴾ from their location. So her isolation in the direction of the rising lights indicates what will come to her from the divine spirit.
