Commentary

'O Yahya, take the Scripture' meaning the Torah 'with strength.' When prophethood cannot be upheld except by the establishment of reason upon reaching maturity. The burden of it before that was of such greatness, indicated by the letter 'noon' in His saying: 'And We gave him' with what we have of greatness 'the judgment' meaning prophethood [and understanding of the Torah] 'as a boy' due to the predominance of the spirit over him. This miracle did not necessitate wisdom to be for our Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, because his people had no prior experience with prophethood. So when they denied him, they would not have within themselves what would require them to contradict themselves. Thus, they were compensated with something greater than that by the instincts of truthfulness that necessitated for him the title of 'the Trustworthy,' so that they would be thereby denying themselves in their denial of him. And with the continued preservation of his miraculous Qur'anic message after him, it calls people to his religion [a call that cannot be resisted].
