Commentary
They said, meaning their translators or their neighbors - those who are below them - as in the Mushaf of Ibn Mas'ud, from whom some of their words are known, or by indication as is addressed to you: 'O Dhul-Qarnayn, we have been touched by harm. 'Indeed, Gog and Magog' are two tribes of people from the descendants of Japheth. Their matter cannot be endured, nor can their fire be extinguished. It has been established in the authentic narration regarding the sending of the fire that they are from the descendants of Adam, peace be upon him. 'Corruptors in the land' by various types of corruption. 'So shall we make for you a way out?' We will bring it out for you from our wealth - this is according to the reading of the majority, and Hamzah and Al-Kisai added an 'alif. It was said that they are of one meaning, and it was said rather that the way out is what you have volunteered with, and the tax with the 'alif is what is obligatory upon you. 'On the condition that you make' in all that 'between us and them' of the land from which they can reach us with what Allah has given you of the ability, 'a barrier' that connects between these two mountains.
