Commentary
And when he mentioned what is necessary regarding the estimation of his remaining from corruption, he caused his saying: "So We intended" to mean by killing him and relieving them from his evil. And since the compensation for this child is solely for Allah, he attributed the action to Him in His saying: "That He may replace them with their Lord" meaning the Benefactor to them by giving and taking "better than him as a charity" that is pure and blessed. [That is -] in terms of his being outwardly pure at the moment, and as for the outcome, if he had lived, he would have been foul, manifestly evil. And this replacement could be patience, and it could be another child, which is the conveyed meaning that she was a daughter. "And closer in kinship" is righteousness towards them, kindness to them, and mercy for them. Thus, the harm that befell them from the regret over him was less than the harm that would have befallen them at his maturity by corrupting their religion or their worldly affairs.
