Commentary
﴿So they found a servant from Our servants﴾ added to the presence of Our greatness, and he is Al-Khidr, peace be upon him. ﴿We gave him﴾ by Our greatness "mercy" meaning revelation and prophethood. His being a prophet is the saying of the majority, "from Us" meaning from what does not occur according to the laws of customs, except that it is not strange to the people of selection. ﴿And We taught him from Us﴾ meaning from the hidden matters that are strange to those who are with Us, which did not occur from the usual causes. So it is strange to the people of selection. ﴿Knowledge﴾ We cast into his heart without intermediary; [and] the scholar Abu Al-Hasan Al-Harali said: "‘At’ in the language of the Arabs is for what appears, and ‘ladun’ is for what is hidden. So the intended meaning of mercy is what appears from his miracles, and of the hidden knowledge that is certainly known to be specific to His presence, glorified is He. The people of (p-107) Sufism called the knowledge through the path of unveiling ‘knowledge of laduni’. So when the servant strives in the spiritual exercises, the outward adorns itself with worship, and the soul sheds the vile morals and adorns itself with beautiful morals. The sensory, imaginative, and fanciful powers become extremely strong. [And then the power -] of the intellect becomes strong [pure, and perhaps the soul, according to the original nature, is luminous, divine, elevated, with little attachment -] to bodily occurrences, and is greatly prepared to accept divine matters. So the divine lights shine in it and overflow upon it from the realm of holiness in the utmost perfection, and knowledge and sciences are obtained without reflection and contemplation. This is the knowledge of laduni.
