Commentary
And when he preceded the speech about resurrection, and he proved it by the beginning of creation, then he mentioned some of its conditions. He followed that with examples he provided for that and others, and he presented various ways of proof. He concluded that with the fact that he gives respite at times of distress. He followed that by stating that he does the same at times of joy. For everything with Him is recorded, and every decree is by measure and calculation. He mentioned the story of Musa with Al-Khidr, peace be upon them both, and what happened to him in his quest. He made the fish a sign and a promise for their meeting. If He had willed, He would have made it closer and not made him endure hardship, with what is in it of the miraculous indicating resurrection. And as evidence that whoever's virtue and knowledge is established, it is not permissible for anyone to object to him except for one who is certain of what he says from his Lord, nor to be tested. And from the guidance to the condemnation of arguing without knowledge, and the necessity of submitting to the truth when it is clarified, and the appearance of its proof. And from the guidance of one who refrains from sitting with the reciters of the believers, as happened to Musa, peace be upon him, when he - being the speaker with Allah - followed Al-Khidr, peace be upon him, to acquire knowledge from him. And from rebuking the Jews by their saying to Quraysh when they commanded them to ask the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him and his family, 'If he does not inform you, then he is not a prophet,' implying to the Arabs who do not know anything that one of the conditions of a prophet is that nothing should be hidden from him, while they know that what Al-Khidr, peace be upon him, did was hidden from Musa, peace be upon him. And to this, Al-Khidr, peace be upon him, indicated with his words when the bird landed on the edge of the ship and pecked from the sea once or twice: 'My knowledge and your knowledge, O Musa, is nothing compared to the knowledge of Allah except as this bird has diminished from the sea.' And by informing them of what they know that Musa, peace be upon him, made himself a follower of Al-Khidr, peace be upon him, it is a denial to them in their claim that there is no one superior to Musa, peace be upon him, in any of the attributes, and that it is not appropriate for anyone to follow another. And from their response to what they might say to the Arabs out of disbelief and envy, 'If he were a prophet, he would not have said: I will inform you tomorrow,' and he delayed that, with what happened to Musa in his promise to Al-Khidr, peace be upon them both, to be patient, and with what was hidden from him of what Al-Khidr, peace be upon them both, had seen. So Allah, the Exalted, said, referring to His saying, glorified and exalted is He, 'And when We said to the angels...' [Al-Kahf: 50] 'And when' means remember for them when 'Musa said,' meaning the son of Imran, the messenger to the Children of Israel, that is, his saying at that time to his servant, 'Yusha ibn Nun, peace be upon them: 'I will not cease to proceed in search of the servant whom my Lord has informed me of His favor - as indicated by what follows - 'until I reach the junction of the two seas,' meaning their meeting place and the location of their mixing, which my understanding had previously reached. Thus, it was determined to begin with it, so he cast it there, 'or I will travel for a long time,' if I do not attain the junction of the two seas which my Lord has made a promise for me in meeting Him; and 'the long time' - it was said in the dictionary - is eighty years or more, and 'time' and 'year' or 'years' - it has ended. And how appropriate is the timing with the junction of the two seas of water with the junction of the two seas of knowledge and their provision with the 'nun' which Allah has associated with the pen and what they write, and the essence of life, for knowledge is the life of hearts. So they traveled and provisioned themselves with a roasted fish in a basket as they were commanded, and they were eating from it until they reached the junction.
