Commentary
And when that was not for the Messenger, but rather for Allah, He clarified it by His saying, "And We do not send" based on the greatness that we have, which no one has any authority over with us, "the messengers except as bringers of good tidings" regarding the actions of obedience, "and warners" regarding the actions of disobedience. So the wrongdoers among their nations seek from them what is not for them regarding the resolution of the matter, "and they argue with those who disbelieve," meaning they renew the argument whenever a matter comes to them from Our side, "with falsehood" from their saying: If you were truthful, you would bring what we ask of you, while that is not the case because no one other than Allah has any authority over the matter, "to invalidate" meaning to slip and remove and nullify "thereby the truth" that is established from the miracles that prove their truthfulness.
And when there is a suitable saying for every situation, and for every saying there is a limit and state, the argument came in the form of the future tense. And the act of mockery is a single matter, it was brought in the past tense, so He said, "And they took" meaning they imposed upon themselves that they took "My signs" with the good tidings that are specifically intended for every living being, "and what they were warned of" from My signs, it was built for the passive because the doer is known and the alarming is the warning, "as mockery" while they are very far from that. So neither out of desire did they obey, nor out of fear did they recoil, so they were worse than the animals.
