42And its produce was overwhelmed by calamities and he stood wringing his hands (in anguish) over what he had invested in it, while it was fallen down on its trellises and he was saying, “I wish I had not ascribed any partner to my Lord!”

And when it was known that this sincere believer was in a state of pleasure, it was known that the estimation was: he was responded to by this believing man, or: what he anticipated was realized, thus disappointing the disbeliever's expectation. So he turned to his saying: ﴿And surrounded﴾ meaning: the surrounding was inflicted with destruction, [built for the passive] because the thought is obtained by the surrounding of destruction without regard to a specific doer, and for the indication of its ease ﴿by its fruits﴾ meaning: the disbelieving man, all of him was uprooted for destruction [whatever -] in the plain of it and whatever in the mountain, and whatever can endure of it in the cold and the heat and what cannot endure. ﴿So he became turning his hands﴾ in regret, and striking one of them upon the other in sorrow ﴿for what he spent in it﴾ for its construction and growth ﴿and it is empty﴾ meaning: (p-65) fallen with emptiness ﴿upon its roofs﴾ meaning: its supports that used to carry it, thus they fell to the ground and it fell upon them. ﴿And he says﴾ wishing to return what has passed due to his bewilderment and the astonishment of his mind and his amazement: ﴿Oh, if only I had﴾ wishing for reliance upon Allah without associating partners with reliance upon the transient ﴿I did not associate anyone with my Lord﴾ as his companion said to him.
