Then he increased in tyranny and arrogance by limiting his view to the present. He said: ﴿And I do not think the Hour will arise﴾, indulging in what he is in and seeking permanence in it, relying upon it.

And when man is naturally inclined to the predominance of hope over him, if he attains from the causes of wealth, prolonged comfort, reaching his desires, and being led on by the success of his requests that which nourishes him, establishes his roots, and strengthens him, fear diminishes until it fades away, becoming non-existent. So Allah, exalted is He, said, recounting the words of this disbeliever (p-60): What has hope produced for him of safety from the evil of what fate brings, swearing: ﴿And if I were returned﴾ [meaning, if a returner were to return me -] ﴿to my Lord﴾, who is good to me in this abode, in the abundance of the decree of its existence, which he employs in his obligation with a tool of doubt, ﴿I would surely find better than it﴾, meaning this Paradise; and Ibn Kathir and Ibn Amir read it in the dual form for the two Gardens. ﴿As a return﴾, meaning in terms of reversal, its time, and its place, because He has given me that only by my deserving it.
