Commentary
And when the speech was about the differences that occurred among them, and the two parties were together, they and those who opposed them were close in their ignorance regarding the counting of it in a decisive manner. The Jews who commanded Quraysh to ask about their matter, out of doubt in the religion, did not know their matter in reality. He pointed to that by saying - in response to one who seemed to say: which of them has counted it? - ﴿We﴾ or it could be said: And when Allah, glorified and exalted is He, informed about the second question of Quraysh, which is the story of the People of the Cave, summarizing it somewhat after summarizing the answer to the first question, which is the soul, the listener was worthy of having his soul aspire to a clarification greater than that, so that his chest would become tight for fearing to be limited to what occurred of that from the news. So he said in response to one who seemed to say: I ask for clarification and the statement of the truth from the differences of the two parties: We ﴿We narrate﴾ meaning we inform with a narration following their traces step by step ﴿to you﴾ in the manner of detail ﴿the news of them with the truth﴾ meaning their great news [and there is no one other than us except] a narration mixed with falsehood: addition or omission. So it was as if it was said: What was their news? He, exalted is He, said: ﴿Indeed, they are youths﴾ meaning young men ﴿who believed in their Lord﴾ the Benefactor to them, the One who looks into their interests, who alone created them and provided for them, and guided them by what He granted them in the essence of their nature from good and beneficial minds.
And when He indicated to the benevolence by the name of the Lord, and there was in His action with them from the manifest power what does not remain hidden, He turned to the station of greatness and said, exalted is He, adding to what you estimate: So they were guided by their faith: ﴿And We increased them﴾ after they believed ﴿in guidance﴾ by what We cast into their hearts of knowledge, and We opened for them their chests from the gifts that led them to commit to abstaining from worldly matters and to turning to Him.
