99Have they not seen that Allah who has created the heavens and the earth has the power to create them as they were? He has appointed a time for them in which there is no doubt. Still, the wrongdoers refused to do anything but reject.

Commentary

Then he followed it with a decisive statement regarding their ignorance. He said - alerting them that they are more deserving of denial; adding to what can be inferred: "Did they not see that Allah, who began their creation, is capable of bringing them back?" -: ﴿Did they not see﴾; meaning: they should know with the insight of their hearts; a knowledge that is like seeing with the eyes of their sight; due to the evidence that stands upon it; and it calls for its correctness from the clear witnesses. ﴿That Allah﴾; meaning: the Most High King; encompassing all things with power and knowledge; no one else; ﴿Who created the heavens﴾; He gathered them for what it indicated of beauty; and since the earth did not have a similar quality, He singled it out; intending the good kind for gathering; so He said (Exalted is He): ﴿and the earth﴾; despite its large masses; and the greatness of its structure; and the strength of its parts; and the vastness of its regions; and the abundance of what is in it from the resources; and the aids; which He tears apart and annihilates; then renews it and revives it; ﴿capable of creating﴾; meaning: renewing at any time He wishes; ﴿like them﴾; as a beginning; so how about the resurrection?! They are weaker in matter; and lesser in status; "And"; that He; "set for them a term"; for their punishment; or their death; or their resurrection; because it is known in itself; ﴿There is no doubt about it﴾; in one of the aspects; for what they have repeatedly witnessed that no soul is delayed when its term comes; and likewise, it is not advanced beyond its term; how many among those who exerted themselves, the fierce lions and the strong men, in their harm; or in their killing; and they are certain that it is in their grasp; yet they could not achieve that; then it happened to the weakest of people; or by the weakest reason; thus it is known that He is the One who is unique in the ability to create and to annihilate. ﴿But they refused﴾; meaning: yes; they certainly knew that knowledge like the perceived and visible; thus the cause of that for faith was that they refused - this was the original; so He manifested a generalization; and a connection with the description; and said: ﴿the wrongdoers﴾; meaning: these stubborn ones refused due to their injustice; ﴿except in denial﴾; meaning: in disbelief; due to the absence of partnership.
