Commentary

Then he clarified the reason for their punishment; so that among them may return whoever has decreed happiness for himself. He said (glorified and exalted is He): "That"; meaning: the great punishment; "is their recompense because they"; are people of misguidance; "disbelieved in Our signs"; the Qur'anic ones; and others; with what they have of greatness in relation to us. They were increasing in disbelief every day; and they were determined to continue in that as long as they remained. "And they said"; in denial of Our power; "What! When we are decayed bones and fragments in the earth?" Then they repeated the denial; as if they were certain of this matter of theirs; whose falsehood is clearer than the sun; by saying: "Are we really to be resurrected?"; meaning: our resurrection is certain; "as a new creation?"; so We will show them recompense for this repeated denial of the new creation in their skins; repeated every moment: "Whenever their skins are roasted, We will replace them with other skins so they may taste the punishment" [Quran 4:56].
