93Or you have a house made of gold. Or you ascend to the sky, and we will not believe in your ascension unless you send down to us a book we may read.” Say, “I proclaim the Purity of my Lord. I am nothing but human, a messenger.”

Commentary

﴿Or do you have﴾; that is: specific to you; ﴿a house of adornment﴾; that is: of gold; complete in beauty and decoration; ﴿or do you ascend﴾; that is: rise; ﴿to the sky﴾; step by step; and we are watching you as you ascend; ﴿And we will not believe﴾; that is: we will not affirm; ﴿in your ascension﴾; that is: originally; ﴿until you bring down﴾; and they confirmed the meaning of it being from the sky by saying: ﴿upon us a book﴾; and the meaning of it being on parchment; or similar to their saying; by their saying: ﴿We will read it﴾; He commands us in it to follow you.

So when their stubbornness was complete; the state of affairs was as if seeking from Allah (glorified and exalted is He) the answer to it; Allah (glorified and exalted is He) commanded him to respond to them; by saying: ﴿Say: Glorified is my Lord﴾; that is: He is exalted above having a partner in His dominion who asks of Him what is not asked except from the deity; so it is a glorification of Allah; and a wonder from Him; due to the clarity of their obstinacy in asking for what only the deity has the power to do; from one who has no power over anything of it; except by the permission of Allah; and he never claimed that he was capable of anything of it; so the inquiry became very appropriate in His saying (glorified and exalted is He): ﴿Was I anything but a human﴾; who cannot do other than what a human can do; ﴿a messenger﴾; as were those before me from the messengers; I do not exceed what I was commanded regarding the conveying; so I do not bring anything except by the permission of Allah; and I did not say: I am a deity; until what is asked of me is asked of the deity; and they arranged themselves in this arrangement; because they confined his state to the claim that he is great by the message; or otherwise; for people to follow him; if the former, then the saying would be accepted by his sender; and at that time either he would ask him for a general benefit from the spring; or specific to him; in paradise if he was stingy with the general; or harm by the pieces; or he would ask him to come with his army to affirm him; and if his greatness was not by that; then either he would be a king; so that he would have the mentioned house; by what is customary for it to be under him; or he would be among those who gather with the king who sent him and ascend; as they said.
