Commentary
And when it was possible for them to say: If something has escaped you, then bring something like it from yourself; and from what you have acquired from the legends; He commanded him to respond to them with this by saying - indicating the meaning of what preceded it -: ﴿Say﴾; and when the resemblance here was intended in all detail to all the surahs in the truthful meanings; and the elegant arrangements; as indicated by the expression with the Qur'an; He increased the challenge by the condition of the gathering of the two weights; and diverted the aspirations for cooperation; and collaboration; and support; unlike what has passed in the previous surahs; so He said (the Exalted) - affirming with the prefatory 'lam' for the oath; for their claim that if they wished, they would have brought something like it; and the answer then is for the oath; and the answer to the condition is omitted; indicated by the answer to the oath -: ﴿If the humans gathered﴾; those whom you know; and you know what they have brought of eloquence; and wisdom; and those whom you do not know; and He presented them for the ease of their gathering with them; and because they have the origin in eloquence; ﴿and the jinn﴾; those who come to your soothsayers; and encourage them; and inform them of some of the unseen from them; and He left the angels because they have no covenant with anything of their words; ﴿to come﴾; meaning: to renew bringing something; at some time; in the state of their gathering; ﴿like this Qur'an﴾; meaning: all of it; as it is in detail; and He specified it by indication to alert that what he says - blessings and peace be upon him - about Allah is revelation from Allah; there is nothing of it from himself; and that what is intended in this challenged context; whose name is the Qur'an; specifically; ﴿they will not come﴾.
And when this surah was Meccan; it was most likely that in this verse it would be the last of the Meccan; so the challenge is specific to it; and it was apparent that if it was repeated in an implied form; it could allow for specificity; and the intended meaning is rather comprehensiveness; and whenever comprehensiveness is intended, it is commenced for it; encompassing with a resumption of a comprehensive manifestation; as will come from Al-Harali in the end of Surah 'Al-Kahf'; He did not say here 'with it'; for that reason; and so that it is not assumed that it returns to the Qur'an; not to something like it; rather He manifested; so He said - indicating that what is meant is all of the Meccan; and the Medinan -: ﴿like it﴾; meaning: not with the restriction to its true wise meanings; until they bring words in the highest levels of eloquence; clarifying the best meanings; with the clearest structures; and not with the detachment from them to fabricated meanings; then He clarified that what is meant is the ruling for their incapacity collectively; and individually; appearing together; and not appearing together; so He said (the Exalted): ﴿And if﴾; and when the accountable ones are inclined to opposition; and conflicting interests; He said (the Exalted): ﴿were﴾; meaning: by nature; and disposition; contrary to the usual; ﴿some of them to others are supporters﴾; meaning: helpers; by combining the strongest of what is in it to the strongest of what is in his companion; and what has preceded in the surahs mentioned in the challenge completes this meaning.
