Commentary
And when he explained their intention regarding the fitnah, concerning what had come to them of knowledge; by changing the revealed; and removing the Messenger; and what followed that; until he concluded by making them ignorant; when they asked, out of obstinacy, about the physical soul; and what would have been more beneficial for them was to ask for understanding; and to comprehend the subtleties of the spiritual soul; which Allah has honored them with; by sending it to them through the tongue of a man from among them; who is the most honorable of them in glory; and the purest of them in soul; and the greatest of them in lineage; and the most virtuous of them in character; and the highest of them in ambition; and he concluded by diminishing their knowledge; indicating that they do not understand; except that He makes them understand it - glorified and exalted is He -; and He knows best what they understand; and what they do not understand; He said - referring to "And indeed, they were almost misleading you"; as a warning to them that if He had willed, He would have taken away because of this little knowledge; which He had granted them; and ignorance would have encompassed them; as it was before; and that it was not enough for them to refrain from asking about what concerns them; until they asked about what does not concern them; and they wanted to change what benefits and concerns them; with what destroys them; and annihilates them; so they went astray in word and deed -: "And if We had willed"; and Our will is not made great by anything; and its lam is a preparatory for the oath; and He answered the oath with what sufficed from the answer of the condition; He said (the Exalted): "We would certainly have taken away"; meaning: with what We have of greatness; a certain taking away; "with that which We have revealed"; meaning: with what We have of greatness; "to you"; from what they intended fitnah in it from the Qur'an; on the condition that in it is knowledge that would suffice them - if they had approached understanding it - from anything; so that there would remain with you neither us; nor Our revelation; and to convey this, He did not say: "We would take away"; "Then"; meaning: after taking it away; "you will not find for yourself"; and when the context here is about the soul; which is the revelation; the concern for it was greater; He preceded His saying: "with it"; and when the context is for one who takes what he wants willingly or unwillingly; He said (the Exalted): "Upon Us"; meaning: with what We have of greatness; which cannot be opposed; "and a guardian"; will bring it to you; or something of it.
