And when that was concluded; it was as if it was said: Is there not for this time a return like the first? So He gave them hope with His saying - glorified and exalted is He -: "Perhaps your Lord"; meaning: the One who has accustomed you with His goodness; "will have mercy on you"; so He will turn to you; and honor you; then He frightened them with His saying (exalted is He): "And if you return"; meaning: with what we know of your returning to disobedience a third time; and beyond that; "we have returned"; meaning: with what you know of the greatness; to your punishment in this world; and they have returned more than once; as indicated by the words; and even if it is in the context of condition; to show the difference between the words of the scholar and others; and this is indicated by His saying in the Torah; after what has passed: (And when all these sayings are completed upon you; and the supplication; and the curse that I recited to you; then repent in your heart while you are separated among the peoples that Allah separates you in; and turn to your Lord; and listen to His words; and act upon all that I command you today, you and your children, with all your heart; then your Lord will return your captivity and have mercy on you; and He will return and gather you from all the peoples that He has scattered you among; and if the dispersers, O children of Israel, are in the corners of the earth, your Lord Allah will gather you from there; and bring you closer from there; and return you to the land which your fathers inherited; and you will inherit; and He will bestow His blessings upon you; and you will multiply better than your fathers; and Allah will seal your hearts and the hearts of your offspring forever; (p-379) and you will fear Allah your Lord with all your hearts; and your souls; when He gives you rest; and blesses you; and Allah will bring down all this curse upon your enemies; and those who have harmed you; "And We made"; meaning: after that by Our greatness; "Hell"; which is thrown into it with frowning and hatred; "for the disbelievers"; and this apparent description is a place of a pronoun to clarify the attachment of the ruling to it; in a manner of firmness; whether they are in that or others; and in it is an indication that they return to corruption; and that among them are those who believe; and among them are those who disbelieve; "a prison"; meaning: a confinement that confines them to the utmost confinement; and from Al-Hasan that "the prison"; is that which is spread and laid out; so the meaning is that He makes it their bedding.
