Commentary
And when He established the matter of the fundamentals of religion with oneness; and the ability to return; and He established their matter in the best manner; and He appealed to them with His blessings; and He warned them of His punishments; and He established that He - glorified and exalted is He - protected him - blessings and peace be upon him - from their trials in both ease and hardship; by what He illuminated him with from his insight; and improved from his public and private affairs; it became known that he had dedicated himself to worship; and prepared for vigilance; so he began with the noblest of it; and thus he reached His saying (the Most High): "Establish"; meaning: truly by action; and metaphorically by the intention to do so; "the prayer"; by performing all of its conditions; and pillars; and principles; and goals; such that it becomes as if it is standing by itself; for it is the essence of worship; with what is in it of pure supplication; by turning away from all others; and the annihilation of everything "other than"; by what has shone from the lights of the presence, to which everything perishing has faded; and in that is a great indication that the prayer is the greatest supporter against the enemies; those who seek by their cunning to provoke the allies; and the most effective means against harm; and the means to bring about every good; and for this reason, "the Prophet - blessings and peace be upon him and his family - when something troubled him, he rushed to the prayer;" as has been previously mentioned in the conclusion of "Al-Hijr"; then he specified for it the times; with His saying (the Most High): "At the decline of the sun"; meaning: its setting; and its yellowing; and its disappearance; it was said in the dictionary: "The sun has declined": it has set; or it has yellowed; or it has tilted; or it has moved from the zenith of the sky; so at that time, in this term, there is an indication of the noon; and the afternoon; and the sunset; from the use of the shared term in its meanings; as for the noon; and the sunset; it is clear; and as for the afternoon; it is because its first time is the first taking of the sun in yellowing; and the clearest evidence for that is that He limited the establishment to the time of the night prayer; so He said (the Most High): "Until"; urging the intention to pray whenever the time comes; so that he may be a constant worshipper; for a person in prayer does not wait for the prayer; so it is clear that the time of the sunset is from the decline; which is the setting; until the twilight disappears; "the darkness of the night"; for the darkness is the darkness of the beginning of the night; and it is the time of sleep; and Al-Razi said in "Al-Lawa'ih": it is the intensification of the darkness of the night; and Al-Rummani said: the appearance of its darkness; then he connected it; by changing the context; with His saying (the Most High): "And the Quran"; as if he said: then sleep; and establish the Quran of "the dawn"; indicating the morning; and it was said: it is an indication of encouragement; and as if he expressed it by the Quran; because it is, while being the greatest of the pillars of prayer; prolonged in its recitation more than in others; and he recites it aloud in it unlike its counterpart; the afternoon; and as an encouragement by expressing it to it; due to its heaviness with sleep.
And when standing from sleep is difficult, he encouraged it, making it evident and not concealing it. This is because the position is one of glorification. So Allah, the Most High, said: ﴿Indeed, the recitation of the dawn is witnessed﴾. It is witnessed by the two groups of angels, and it is worthy for everyone to witness it due to the pleasure it brings to the ears, the delight to the heart, and the revival of the soul. Thus, the verse became inclusive of the prayers. Al-Bukhari narrated in the tafsir from Abu Huraira - may Allah be pleased with him - who said: The virtue of the prayer in congregation over the prayer of an individual is twenty-five degrees. And the angels of the night and the angels of the day gather in the prayer of dawn. Abu Huraira said: Read if you wish: ﴿Indeed, the recitation of the dawn﴾; the verse. They said: And this is evidence of the obligation of praying at the beginning of the time, and that praying at dawn in darkness is better.
