And when it was made clear that they had tried to sway him with gentleness; until they almost - had it not been for divine protection - swayed him; it indicated that they frightened him after that; until they almost drove him out of his homeland before the specific permission for migration; so He, the Most High, said: "And if"; meaning: and indeed they "almost"; meaning: the enemies; "would drive you out"; meaning: they would belittle you with the abundance of harm; which is of its nature; in what is customary; "from the land"; meaning: the Meccan land; which is the land as a whole; because it is its mother; "to drive you out from it"; while your presence among them is a mercy for them; so none of them is blind to it; and the root of "fazz" is cutting with intensity; as said by Al-Rummani; "And if"; meaning: and if they drive you out; "they will not remain after you"; meaning: after your expulsion; if they had driven you out; "except for a little"; and they will know when We permit you to depart how We will pour upon them the punishment; shortly after your departure; with your long spear; and your shining sword; and the swords of your believing followers; for the establishment of this religion; and Allah has fulfilled - glorified and exalted is He - this promise; by killing their leaders in the battle of Badr; in Ramadan; in the second year of the migration; after eighteen months from his migration - blessings and peace be upon him and his family -; and He prohibited the polytheists who drove him out - blessings and peace be upon him and his family - from entering it; and residing in its sanctuary from the Arabian Peninsula; in honor of him - blessings and peace be upon him and his family -; and as revenge against those who believe something of the disbelief of those who drove him out; and He raised "they will remain"; because "if"; when it occurs after the conjunctions "wa" and "fa"; it is permissible for it to be omitted; because it is intermediate in the speech; just as it must be omitted at the end of the speech; and in the verse is a clarification that the ignorant continues to set traps for the knowledgeable; and seeks for him misfortunes; which returns upon him with harm; in the present and in the end.
