Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, established with these statements what He facilitated for them of the land; and eased the hardships of the sea; in the context of the threat; He followed it by saying that He did that as an honor for them over all His creations; as is His way in the power over what He wills in the distinction between matters that were equal at the beginning of their creation; so that they may deduce from that the ease of resurrection; indicating that He created the essence of man from a soul that is the noblest of souls - by what He preferred it over the powers of the vegetative soul in nourishment; and growth; and reproduction by sensation; outwardly and inwardly; and with movement by choice; and He distinguished it over all animals with the rational power that comprehends the realities of things; as they are; and through it the light of the knowledge of Allah is manifested; and in it shines the light of His majesty; and it gazes upon the two worlds of creation and command; and it encompasses the categories of creatures from souls; and bodies; as they are; thus the human soul was with that the noblest of souls in this world - and its body likewise; with its distinction of uprightness; and extension; and the ability to grasp with the hand; and other than that; so He, the Exalted, said - in connection to what the context guides to, such as saying: 'Indeed, We have honored you by that from the provision of the ship and your salvation in times of hardship'; or to: 'And indeed, We have preferred' -: 'And We have honored'; meaning: with Our greatness; a great honor; 'the Children of Adam'; meaning: over all clay; by growth; and over all that grows with life; and over all animals with speech; thus the omission of the related matter of honor indicates its generality for all creation; and all of that is a measure of the power over resurrection; 'And We carried them on the land'; on the beasts of burden and others; 'and the sea'; on ships and others; 'and We provided them'; meaning: a provision that befits Our greatness; 'from the good things'; meaning: the delights of fruits; and the sustenance that others eat from the animals' husks; 'and We preferred them'; in their selves; with the goodness of form; and in their attributes with knowledge that produces the happiness of the two abodes; and in Our provision for them of what has preceded.
And when He omitted the related matter of honor; as an indication of generality; and most of its individuals were misguided; He said for that: 'over many of those We created'; meaning: with Our greatness with which We created them; and He affirmed the action with the source; indicating their deep-rootedness in virtue; so He, the Exalted, said: 'a preference'; this is for the collective; and as for the chosen ones, they are the best of creatures; for what we know of their treatment with sincerity; and their striving against their desires; for what their souls are inclined to of deficiencies; and for what they have of plots; until they ascended after the rank of faith to the two degrees of piety; and excellence; and the precedence of the matter for the angels in prostrating to Adam - peace be upon him - as a preparation for this verse; is the clearest evidence for this.
