Commentary

"Or have you become secure"; if the ignorance has exceeded its limit; then do not exceed that; "that He will return you therein"; meaning: the sea; by what we have of greatness; which compels you to that; so He will establish you upon it; even if you dislike it; "once again"; by means that compel you to that; "then He will send upon you"; meaning: by what we have of the attribute of majesty; "a crushing wind"; which is the one that breaks with intensity; "from the wind"; as you have experienced its like, O you whose thoughts have stopped at the tangible; so they accepted that they would be like animals; understanding only the partial observable things; "and He will drown you"; meaning: in the sea; which We have prepared for you; for Our greatness; "by what you have disbelieved"; as one of you does when he prevails over one who has disbelieved in his kindness; "then you will not find for yourselves"; even if you strive in seeking; and your times have prolonged in perfecting the means; and since the negation is released at the end of the previous verse - even if it is intended for generality - it is possible to claim that it is restricted by what contradicts the intended meaning; and the purpose here is to frighten by His might - glorified and exalted is He -; sometimes by the sinking; and sometimes by other than that; He restricted it by what specified the intended meaning; and He preceded His saying (the Exalted): "upon Us"; indicating the magnificent greatness; "by it"; meaning: by what We have done to you; "demanding"; meaning: demanding us by it.
