And when the intended meaning is specifically for the believers; even though the address is to the group; He specifically mentioned the polytheists as well; so He said: "And when"; meaning: so when He has blessed you with various types of good, you were upon your associating partners with Him - glorified and exalted is He -; and when "He touches you"; and He did not say: "You are touched"; attributing it to Himself; as a lesson for us in addressing Him regarding good; without mentioning evil; to Him; with the belief that all is His action; and a reminder that evil is something one should disassociate from; and distance oneself from it; "the harm in the sea"; from the agitation of the water; and the suddenness of it; due to the fierceness of the wind; and the height of the waves; "has gone astray"; meaning: has departed; and has ceased from your mention; and your thoughts; "whom you call upon"; from all existing things; "except Him alone"; so you dedicated the supplication to Him; knowing that none can save you except Him; "so when He saved you"; from drowning; and brought you gradually; "to the land, you turned away"; from being sincere to Him; and you returned to associating partners; "and mankind"; meaning: this type; "is ungrateful"; meaning: is greatly covering what should be made known; so He has manifested in the place of concealment; a reminder that this description does not specifically apply to them; rather it encompasses this type; due to its nature of deficiencies; except for whom Allah has made sincere for Himself.
