Commentary
Then he returned to confronting him with what belittles his matter. For confronting with belittlement is more effective. He is stating the result of that, which is that he is unable except by His permission - glorified and exalted is He. And he is prevented from what He has not decreed for him. This is to dispel what may mislead him from what has passed, that he affects something independently. So He said (the Most High): ﴿Indeed﴾; meaning: strive your utmost; for I have made you dominant over the people of desires; increasing your misery by what I intended from them before your creation and their creation. You cannot exceed anything of it to My exclusive ones and whom I have accepted for My worship. Indeed, ﴿My servants﴾; those whom I have qualified for addition to Me; they have fulfilled the right of My servitude with piety and goodness. ﴿You have no authority﴾; meaning: in any way; ﴿over them is any authority﴾; meaning: you cannot mislead them and lead them to a sin that is not forgiven. For I have guided them to reliance upon Me; so I have sufficed them against your matter. ﴿And sufficient is your Lord﴾; meaning: the one who brings you into existence; the one who manages your affairs; ﴿as a disposer of affairs﴾; who preserves what he is entrusted with from all that can corrupt it.
