Commentary
And when the estimation was made; for the purpose of informing by the correspondence of the news with the news: "Remember that we said to you: ﴿Indeed, those upon whom the word of your Lord has come into effect will not believe﴾ [Yunus: 96] ﴿And if every sign came to them﴾ [Yunus: 97]; and remember what has occurred of that in the past; from the signs of the former ones; and presently; from the story of the Isra; He added to it His saying (the Exalted): ﴿And when﴾; meaning: and remember when; ﴿We said﴾; regarding what we have of the encompassing greatness; ﴿Indeed, your Lord﴾; the One who bestows kindness upon you; with gentleness towards your nation; ﴿Has encompassed the people﴾; in knowledge and power; you will find that if you apply some of it to some matter that is sound; in a manner that is consistent; there is no disparity in it; and know that He is your protector from them; and your barrier; and manifesting your religion; as He promised you; then He added to "And We do not send"; His saying (the Exalted): ﴿And We did not make﴾; meaning: by what we have of the overwhelming power; which has absolute richness; ﴿The vision which We showed you﴾; meaning: by that greatness; which you witnessed on the night of the Isra; ﴿Except as a trial﴾; meaning: as a test; and examination; ﴿For the people﴾; so that it may become evident by that in the world of testimony the righteous doer; and the ignorant wrongdoer; as it is with us in the world of the unseen; so that we may establish the proof against them; not for anyone to believe from those upon whom the word has come into effect; nor for us to increase in knowledge of their secrets; and there is no doubt that the story of the Isra to Bayt al-Maqdis; then to the highest heavens; was a wakefulness; not a sleep; with the decisive evidence that is widely reported; from the denial of those who denied; and the apostasy of those who apostatized; and this is the doctrine of the majority; and the people of the Sunnah; and the community; and there has come in its authenticity what cannot be counted from the reports; this transmission; and as for the rational possibility, it is established; not needing clarification; for indeed every particle of the existents in it has wonders; and strange things; and subtleties; and delicate matters; that minds become bewildered by; but when it was according to custom, natures became accustomed to it; so the eyes did not deny it; nor did the ears; and as for something like this, when it was contrary to custom, the weak-minded denied it; those whose understanding does not exceed the tangible; according to what they are accustomed to from habits; and as for the people of understanding; those who are free from the inclinations of Satan; and the whispers of custom; and looked with the eyes of insight at the effects of Allah's mercy in the making of creations; and the occurrences of innovations in the dominion and the kingdom; and the testimony and the unseen; and the creation and the command; they acknowledged it; and indeed it is from the great signs; and the wondrous clear evidences; and the most evident proof of that is His saying (the Exalted): "A trial"; because if it were a vision of sleep, it would not be such that anyone would dismiss it; so it would not be a trial; and perhaps He only called it a vision - and it is for sleep - in the manner of comparison; and metaphor; for what is in it of the extraordinary matters that are more fitting in the course of customs; Al-Bukhari narrated in the tafsir; from Ibn Abbas - may Allah be pleased with them both - ﴿And We did not make the vision which We showed you﴾; the verse; he said: it is a vision of the eye; which the Messenger of Allah - blessings and peace be upon him - was shown on the night he was taken on the Isra.
And when everything whose cause is hidden and goes beyond the norm is a trial, he knows by it who in his nature is true and who in his nature is false, and who is of sound disposition and who is its opposite. And it has been reported that the tree of Zaqqum grows at the root of Hellfire. And that is extremely strange. He included it in the Isra' (Night Journey) in that. So He said (the Exalted): "And the tree"; as a conjunction to "the vision"; "the accursed in the Qur'an"; because it is harmful; and the Arabs call every harmful thing accursed; and because it is in the abode of curse; and everyone who has reason wants to distance it from him. And it is - as narrated by Al-Bukhari in the tafsir from Ibn Abbas - may Allah be pleased with both of them - the tree of Zaqqum; we have also made it a trial for the people; we establish by it the proof against them in disbelief and faith; so we strengthen them; that is: whom we wanted his faith among them from the beginning; and it is the Isra'; "And we frighten them"; with the second; and similar things; "So what does it increase them"; that is: the disbelievers among them; the fright; during the fright; so what comes after it from the times of the future is more deserving of increase; "Except in transgression"; that is: exceeding the limit; it is of great magnitude; "Great"; so they say in the first what has preceded at the beginning of the surah; and in the second: Indeed, Muhammad says: Indeed, the fuel of the Fire is people and stones; then he says: Indeed, in it is a tree; you have known that the Fire burns the tree; and they did not say what they are the most knowledgeable of people about; that the One who made for them from the green tree fire is capable of making in the Fire a tree. And among the most appropriate things to mention here is what the scholar, the Sheikh of our scholars, Zain al-Din Abu Bakr ibn al-Husayn al-Maraghi, mentioned in the dictionary of Al-Ayn al-Madani, in the history of the noble city, at the beginning of the fourth chapter, in mentioning the valleys; for he said: The valley of Al-Shazah - that is: with two open letters - comes from the eastern part of the city; from places far from it; until it reaches the dam that was caused by the fire of Al-Harra that appeared in Jumada al-Akhirah in the year 455 and 600 - meaning: it is referred to by the saying of the Prophet - blessings and peace be upon him - "The Hour will not come until a fire comes from Hijaz whose light will illuminate the necks of camels"; he said: And its appearance was from a valley called Ahiliyyin in the eastern Harrah; and it lasted from its emergence to the north for three months; it crawled like an ant; eating what it passed over from mountain and stone; and it did not eat the tree; so it did not pass over anything of that except it became a barrier; there was no passage for a person in it; nor for a beast; to the end of the Harrah from the northern side; so he mentioned the story; and it is strange; and he narrated it from Al-Matari regarding its not harming the wood.
