Commentary
And when it was established that His affair, glorified and exalted is He, is to do that; and similar things; from preference; and transformation; according to His knowledge; and His ability; it was established without doubt that there is no refuge except to Him. So He commanded him - blessings and peace be upon him and his family - to affirm that by commanding them with what would show the inability of their partners; in response to their saying: We are not worthy of His worship independently; for we worship some of the close ones; so that they may intercede for us with Him. So He said, glorified and exalted is He: "Say, 'Invoke those whom you claim..." And He indicated their weak intellects; and their lack of certainty; by expressing it with the word 'claiming.' So He said, glorified and exalted is He: "You claimed" that they are deities; and He clarified their low rank by His saying, glorified and exalted is He: "besides Him"; meaning: other than Him; like the angels; and 'Uzayr; and the Messiah; and the idols; to bring you good; or to avert harm from you; "So no"; meaning: if you invoke them; or do not invoke them; then they do not "possess the ability to remove harm"; meaning: the misery that is such that it would crush the entire body; "from you"; so that they do not leave anything of it; "nor can they change it"; from one state to a lighter one; let alone that they change it to a good state; or transfer it to your enemy; and the verse is similar to His saying, glorified and exalted is He: "So you cannot avert or assist" [Al-Furqan: 19]. So how can anyone among them take me as a protector? They said: And the reason for its revelation was the complaint of Quraysh to the Prophet - blessings and peace be upon him and his family - about what had befallen them from the drought; when he prayed against them with seven years like the years of Yusuf - peace be upon him -; and He did not state "they possess"; so that it would not be thought that the negation is caused by the invocation; thus it would be restricted by it.
