Commentary
Then he began firmly with his saying: ﴿On the Day﴾; meaning: that will be the Day ﴿He will call you﴾; meaning: the caller will call you from Him; by the blast; or otherwise; as if to say: O people of the graves; arise for the recompense; or something like that; ﴿And you will respond﴾; meaning: you will agree with the caller; so you will do what he intended by his call; and you will seek his response; and you will find it; or he borrowed the calling and the responding for the resurrection; and the rising; as a reminder of their swiftness; and the ease of their matter; or that the intention behind them is to bring forth for the reckoning; ﴿With His praise﴾; meaning: with His encompassing - glorified and exalted is He - of all things; in power; and knowledge; without any deficiency at all; rather to the utmost of submission; as indicated by the form of 'istaf'al'; and you, with the swiftness of the response, praise Allah (the Exalted); meaning: you affirm for Him the attribute of perfection; ﴿And you think﴾; with your responding; and the length of your stay; ﴿That you have not remained﴾; meaning: not at all; ﴿Dead﴾; ﴿Except for a little﴾; due to the severity of what you see of the horrors that have surrounded you; and that confront you; or out of ignorance from you regarding the realities of matters; as is your condition today; as you see of the newness of your creation; and the lack of its change.
