Commentary

So when the promise of the first of them comes; that is: its time; which We have determined for it; for the purpose of taking revenge in it; We will send forth; that is: with Our greatness; and He indicated that they are enemies; by His saying: "upon you"; and He indicated His greatness; and His power; and the vastness of His kingdom; by His saying, glorified and exalted is He: "servants of Ours"; that is: you have no power over them; due to what We have granted them of Our greatness; "possessors of might"; that is: punishment; and severity in war is intense; "intense, so they roamed"; that is: they wandered; with oppression; and tyranny; and severe dominance; and "roaming" means: seeking something with thoroughness; "throughout"; that is: between; "the dwellings"; which is necessary for subjugating its people; and their humiliation after that great elevation; and "the interval" means: the separation between two or more things; due to a kind of weakness; and it was; that is: that sending forth; and the promise of punishment with it; "a promise fulfilled"; that is: there is no doubt in its occurrence; and it must be done; for there is no barrier between us and it; and no one changes the saying except the incapable or the ignorant.

From Ibn Abbas - may Allah be pleased with both of them - that they are Goliath and his soldiers; and from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib that they are Nebuchadnezzar and his soldiers; and from al-Hasan: the giants; and from Sa'id ibn Jubayr: the Sanjarib; and his soldiers. He said in the fifth book of the Torah (p-307) - indicating this first time; and Allah knows best -: (And if you do not hear the saying of Allah, your Lord; and do not preserve it; and do not act upon all of His Sunnahs that I command you with today; this curse which I narrate to you will descend upon you; all of it; and punishment will overtake you; and you will be cursed in the village; and in the journey; and in the settled places; and your offspring and the fruits of your land will be cursed; and you will be cursed when you enter; and cursed when you exit; your Lord will send down upon you calamity and swarms; and He will send down upon you severe strikes; and with everything you extend your hands to do; until He destroys you; and quickly obliterates you; because of the evil of your deeds; and your abandonment of My worship; Allah will impose death upon you; so He will destroy you from the land which you enter to inherit; Allah will strike you with confusion of mind; and with leprosy; and with burning; with the encompassing fire; and with jaundice; and scabies; and poisonous bites; and He will impose upon you these nations until you perish; and the sky above you will be like bronze; and the earth beneath you will be like iron; and your Lord will turn the rain of your land into dust; and your Lord will break you before your enemies; you will go out to them in one way; and flee in seven ways; and you will be a parable; and a terror for all the kingdoms of the earth; (p-308) and your carcasses will be food for all the beasts; and the birds of the sky; and no one will drive them away from you; and your Lord will strike you with the wounds with which He struck the people of Egypt; and He will afflict you with leprosy; and with boils; and with itch; and there will be no cure for you from that; and your Lord will strike you with blindness; and with confusion; and with terror of heart; and you will be spying in the daytime like the blind spy; and nothing of what you do will be completed; and it will not be fulfilled; and you will be oppressed; wronged; and forced; all the days of your life; and there will be no savior for you; you will propose to a woman and another will marry her; and you will build a house and another will dwell in it; and you will plant vineyards but will not press from them; and you will slaughter your oxen before you but will not eat from them; and your donkey will be taken unjustly and you will not be able to rescue it; and the enemy will drive your sheep and there will be no savior for you; and another people will take your sons and daughters as captives; and you will look at them but will not be able to rescue them; and you will suffer; and your whole day will be filled with grief; and you will have no way out; and the fruits of your land and all your toil will be consumed by a people you do not know; and you will be oppressed and wronged all your life; (p-309) and your Lord will strike you with a grievous wound on your knees and your legs; and there will be no cure for you; and He will impose upon you wounds from your head to your feet; and your Lord will drive you; and will drive your kingdom which you have ruled over to a people whom your fathers did not know; and you will worship there gods made of wood and stone; and you will be a parable and a wonder; and everyone who hears your news will think of you; then he said: and sons and daughters will be born to you but they will not be yours; rather they will be taken captive; and they will be led away as captives.

Then he said: "And your Lord will impose upon you a people who will come to you while you are hungry and thirsty; and you will serve your enemies whom Allah will impose upon you from afar; from the farthest part of the earth; and they will rush upon you like the flight of an eagle. A people whose language you do not understand; a people with faces that are harsh; they do not feel shame before the elders; nor do they show mercy to the children; and they will constrict you in all your villages until they seize your fortified places upon which you rely; and trust in; and you will be compelled to eat the flesh of your son due to the need and the distress that your enemy will impose upon you; and the pampered man among you who indulges in pleasure; his eyes look to his brother; and his wife; and to what remains of his children; hungry; and he does not give them from the flesh of his son whom he eats; because nothing remains with him from the oppression and the distress that your enemy imposes upon you in all your villages; and the pampered woman who has never set foot on the ground due to her pampering looks at her husband; and at her son; and her daughter; and to her child whom she gives birth to; while she eats them; and this is due to the need; and poverty; and lack of food; from what your enemy constricts upon you and oppresses you in all your villages."
