Commentary
And when the custom of the Qur'an established the affirmation of monotheism, prophethood, and resurrection, and preceded the evidence for the former ones, and concluded with the affirmation of their ignorance regarding prophethood, despite its manifestation, He followed that with a clear matter regarding their misguidance from the path concerning the matter of resurrection. He confirmed it to the utmost degree and clarified it in the most complete manner. He said (Exalted is He) - expressing amazement at them -: ﴿And they said﴾; meaning: the polytheists; those who deny monotheism, prophethood, and resurrection, while acknowledging that We began their creation; and their witnessing at all times that We revive the earth after its death: ﴿Is it﴾; an interrogative denial; as if they were confident in the absence of what they deny; and the operative in 'if' is a verb from the term 'raised'; it does not operate, for what comes after 'indeed' does not work in what precedes it. So the meaning is: Will We be raised if ﴿we were﴾; meaning: with all of our bodies; necessarily; ﴿bones and fragments﴾; meaning: broken debris; shattered; and dust; ﴿Indeed, we will be raised﴾; while we are created; ﴿in a new creation﴾.
