Commentary
Then he connected with that the evidence of their ignorance - glorified and exalted is He - which was the result of their saying this. So He said (the Most High): ﴿Look﴾. And since their matter is one that increases astonishment; and the motives to ask about it are abundant; He said (the Most High): ﴿How did they strike﴾; meaning: these misled ones; ﴿for Allah the examples﴾; which are the furthest thing from Your description; from their saying: a magician; a poet; and a madman; and similar to that; ﴿So they have gone astray﴾; from the truth in all of that; ﴿So﴾; meaning: the consequence of their misguidance is that they do not ﴿find a way﴾; meaning: they do not walk in it; to achieve the trials in an example; or to establish the matter in an action; and this is after Allah forbade them by saying (the Most High): ﴿So do not strike for Allah the examples. Indeed, Allah knows and you do not know﴾ [An-Nahl: 74]; so it is as if this is the first evidence of what we described them with regarding lack of understanding; and hearing; let alone that they have a way to resist this Qur'an - which they claim is the saying of humans - or to cast doubt in its face with a suspicion; let alone evidence.
