Commentary

And when they sometimes claimed to have hearing and understanding, they caused doubt in some of those whose faith was not firmly established. He (the Most High) followed that with what confirms what has passed and strengthens the listeners in it. So He (the Most High) said - in the manner of a response, threatening, and indicating that their perceptions are known -: "We know better"; meaning: than any scholar; "what they listen to"; meaning: they exaggerate in listening and inclining towards the intent of hearing; "with it"; from the ears and hearts; or because of it; from the desire to fall upon a slip that they make a place of their denial and mockery of Him; "when"; meaning: at the time; "they listen"; meaning: they listen with all their effort. And He clarified their moral distance by His saying (the Most High): "to you, and when"; meaning: and at the time; "they"; are those who have; "whisperings"; meaning: they whisper to one another by raising each of their secrets to his companion after they turned away from listening. Then He mentioned the circumstance of the whisperings, saying (the Most High): "when he says"; highlighting their inner thoughts with a description indicating their carrying what they whispered about; and they are the "wrongdoers"; and their saying is: "If you follow"; meaning: O you who follow him; with all your effort; "except a man who is bewitched"; whose mind is mixed up. Thus, they reached the peak of injustice in this description. And the secret of using the passive form in place of the active form will come at the end of the surah.
