Commentary
﴿And We made﴾; meaning: by what We have of greatness; ﴿upon their hearts coverings﴾; meaning: covers; due to their aversion ﴿to understand it﴾; meaning: to understand the Qur'an truly; ﴿and in their ears deafness﴾; meaning: something heavy; that prevents their hearing the beneficial hearing; due to their shortcomings in understanding it; (p-429) not in its clarity; for their vision of the Prophet - blessings and peace be upon him - during the recitation is not correct; just as their hearing and understanding of what he recites is likewise; as He (the Most High) said: ﴿Allah has sealed their hearts and their hearing and their eyes is a veil﴾ [Al-Baqarah: 7] ﴿And when you mention your Lord﴾; meaning: the One who is good to you; and to them; ﴿in the Qur'an﴾; while He is; ﴿alone﴾; with the turning away from their deities; ﴿they turn away﴾; and He affirmed the meaning; and depicted it in a way that increases its ugliness; repelling them from it; so He said: ﴿turning on their backs﴾; a source not from the wording; confirming; for it is a result of its meaning; or the plural of 'nafir' as in 'qa'id' and 'qu'ud'.
And the root of "waqar"; in all its fifteen forms revolves around the meaning of gathering; as mentioned at the end of "Yusuf"; and the beginning of "Al-Hijr"; so "waqar"; with the opening: is a heaviness in the ear; or the complete loss of hearing; because that necessitates a gathering in the soul; and a tranquility that leads to dignity; which is serenity; due to the loss of some of what would scatter thought from hearing; and from that is "waqar"; with the kasra: the burden in general; or the heavy; or because the burden gathers what is in it; and the ear has gathered what blocked it; so it is as if it has gathered its rupture; and thus it has become solid like a deaf stone; nothing penetrates it; and for this reason, deafness is called "sama"; and "a dignified palm tree"; meaning: one that gathers a burden; and "the camels became dignified": they became fat; meaning: they gathered fat and flesh; and "waqar"; like "wa'ada": sat; for the gathering of some of its limbs to some; and "al-wakir": the flock of sheep; or its young; or five hundred of them; or in general; or the sheep with its dog; and its donkey; and its shepherd; like "qira"; for the gathering of some to others; and "al-wakiri"; with a vowel: the shepherd of the flock; or the owner of the sheep; and the owner of the donkeys; and the inhabitants of the city; and "qira"; like "idda": the family; and the burden; and the old man; because old age and heaviness yield the dignity that arises from the gathering of the soul and determination; and leaving dispersion with recklessness; and what precedes them is clear in the gathering; and "al-muwaqqir"; like "mu'azzam": the experienced wise one; who has been shaped by time; because that yields the gathering of the mind; and "I honored the man with dignity": I respected him; and I made him weighty; and "the beast": I calmed it; so it was as if a heavy burden was gathered to it; and "al-tayqur": "fa'yool" from waqar; its ta is replaced by a waw; it is said: "waqar in his house, he settles"; meaning: he gathered himself in it; for the gathering of his concern; and "al-mawqir"; like "majlis": the easy place at the foot of the mountain; perhaps it is likened to the dignified, tranquil, self-settled man; and the bearer who is made easy by the burden; and "al-waqra": a pit; meaning: a hole; that is in the hoof; and the eye; and the stone; because it is the nature of the pit to gather what is deposited in it; and from this is "taqwir al-shay'": to make for it waqar; meaning: traces; and "waqar": the crack in the leg; and like the waqra; or the fracture; that is in the bone; and the stone; and the eye; and "Allah made the beast heavy": He afflicted it with a waqra; and "faqir waqir"; meaning: broken bones; or vertebrae; or a comparison to the young of the sheep; or following; or the meaning is that the debt has burdened him; and "al-waqar": the great hollow in the rock that holds water; and this is clear in the gathering.
"And 'al-Rawq': the horn; due to its strong gathering; for its hardness; and its roundness; and because it combines the boldness of its owner; and his determination; and 'al-Rawq' also means: the determination of a man; and his actions; for their gathering of his matter; and 'al-Rawq from the night': a portion; for the gathering of its hours; and 'al-Rawq from the house': its portico; meaning: its section which is below the upper section; because it completes its gathering; for what is intended from it is covering; and 'the portico of the house'; like 'a book'; and 'a raven': what surrounds it; Al-Qazzaz said: and it is said: 'al-Rawq'; like a tent; that is supported by a single column in its center; it is said in the dictionary: or a roof in the front of the house; and the eyebrow; and perhaps it is likened to covering; and 'from the night': its front; and its side; it is likened to the side of the house; and 'al-Rawq from youth': its beginning; like 'al-Raiq'; with the opening; and 'al-Riq'; like 'a bag'; and its origin is 'Rayuq'; because it is built upon what follows it; and it gathers to it; as if it is the original that gathers all the branches; and 'al-Riq': also means: that something light touches you from the rain; as if it is the first of the rain; and 'al-Ruqah': the light thing; and it is from that; and 'al-Rawq': also means: life; because it is the gathering of the state; and 'something amazed me': it pleased me; because thought gathers the thoughts for its sake; so there does not appear to it a face of what has made it pleased; and 'a pleasing servant': if it pleases you; and 'a pleasing girl'; and 'pleasing boys': the plural of 'Raiq'; and 'al-Ruqah': the very beautiful thing; and 'al-Rawq'; with the opening; admiration; and being pleased with something; and from the horses: the good appearance; it pleases the viewer; and 'the pleasing beauty'; and 'al-Raiq'; and 'al-Rawq'; and 'al-Ruqah': covering; because it gathers sight and concern from what is beyond it; and it is also the place of the hunter; because it gathers him to what he wants; and connects him to it; and 'al-Rawq': the portico; and the front of the house; and the brave cannot be endured; for the gathering of his concern for what he wants; and the tent; and the master; for gathering virtues; and the pure water; and others; because purity is more deserving of the gathering of parts; and 'al-Rawq': the group; and pure love; and the source of 'Raqa 'alayh'; meaning: it increased upon him in virtue; because increase cannot be except from a gathering; and 'al-Rawq': the body from something; for its gathering to it; and the snake; for its encompassing; meaning: its gathering; and 'a calamity with two horns': meaning: great, resembling a bull; and 'he threw his horns on the mount': he rode it; meaning: with all his limbs; and 'he threw his horns from it': he dismounted; and 'he threw his horns': he ran and his running intensified; as if he came out from all his limbs; so he ran as a spirit without a body; thus becoming greater than a bird; meaning: his spirit overcame his body; and 'he threw his horns': he remained in the place content; it is said in the dictionary: as if it is the opposite; it ended; and the object in it is omitted; as if he said: 'in such a place'; and it is known that if his body is in a place and he is alive; then he has remained in it; and 'he threw his horns upon you': meaning: that you love him intensely; and the meaning is that he clothed you with his body; so your spirit became the manager of it; thus you became him; and Al-Qazzaz's expression: 'and it is that you love him until you are consumed in your love for him'; indicates that; and 'the cloud threw its horns': meaning: its rain; and its downpour; or its pure waters; and that is the total of what is in it; and 'the horns of the night': during its darkness; it is likened to a tent; and 'from the eye': its sides; because it contains it; and Al-Qazzaz's expression: 'the night struck with its horns'; if it stood; and it is said: 'its horns': its beginnings; and 'the eye shed its horns': its tears flowed; meaning: all that is in it; as if that is a metaphor for the intensity of weeping; and 'the rawq of the horse': what the horseman extends from his spear between its ears; a comparison to the horn of the bull; and 'that horse is more rawq': and from it 'al-Rawq'; with the movement; it is the length of the teeth; likening it to the rawq; meaning: the horn; Al-Qazzaz said: and it is said: 'al-Rawq': the length of the teeth; and their bending inward; and the upper one overlooking the lower; and 'the people are rawq': if they are like that; and it is suitable to be a comparison to what was mentioned; and to be from the gathering for the sake of bending; and from it 'so-and-so ate his rawq': if he aged; and his life prolonged; until his teeth fell; resembling the horn; and 'al-Tarwiq': the purification; and it has been established that when something is purified from impurities, its parts are more strongly connected; and 'al-Tarwiq': that he sells a commodity and buys a better one; likened to purification; and 'al-Rawuq': the strainer; with which the drink is filtered without squeezing; and the cup itself; and the bottom; and the jug of drink; which it gathers with; because it collects the drink; and 'al-Qarw': the intention and pursuit; like seeking; and investigation; and stabbing; and it is clear in gathering; and 'al-Qarw': a long trough; which the camels come to; and Al-Qazzaz's expression: a resemblance to a trough; extended; elongated beside the trough; from which it is emptied into the greater trough; which the camels and sheep come to; and likewise if it is made of wood; and 'al-Qarw': the land; it is hardly cut; as if it has protected the gathering of its parts from being separated by anyone; and 'al-Qarw': the flow of the press; and its basin; for the gathering of what flows in it; and the bottom of the palm tree; it is dug and something is placed in it; or it is made from it the jug and the cup for drinking; and a small cup or vessel; and the dog's tongue; and a bowl upon it; and a water basin; and the Arabs say: 'the land has become one Qarw'; if the fertility and rain increased; and all of that is clear in gathering; and that the skin of the two eggs becomes thick due to wind or water; or the descent of the intestines like the Qarwah; and that is either due to its resemblance to the cup; or for its gathering what necessitated their size; and 'Qurra'; like 'Fu'la': water in the desert; for gathering the people; and 'al-Qurra': the squash that is eaten; because it is suitable to be made into a vessel; and 'al-Qara': the back; for gathering the limbs; and 'a she-camel that is Qarwah': long of hump; and 'al-Maqruri': long of back; and 'aqra': complained; it may be from the complaint of al-Qar; or it may be for the removal; meaning: it removed the gathering of his concern and determination; and 'al-Qarwah': the habit; for gathering its people; and the butt; for gathering what is in it; and 'aqra': sought the Qar; and adhered to the Qar; and 'aqra the jull upon the horse': he made him adhere to it; and 'al-Maqari': the heads of the hills; because they gather; and 'I left them Qarw one': in one manner; meaning: gathered; and 'a sheep that is Maqrwah': its head was placed in a piece of wood; so that it does not suckle itself; meaning: its jaws were gathered; and 'Qarwat al-Ra's': its edge; and Al-Qazzaz's expression: and 'Qarwan al-Ra's'; and 'Qarwat al-Ra's': its top; as if it is the gathering of its matter; because it is the place of contemplation; and 'Qarwat al-Anf': its edge; because it is the last gathering of its beauty; and 'the boil has gathered': its duration has become; meaning: it has gathered; and 'al-Qayrawan': the majority of the army; and the majority of the caravan; and the remainder of the material will come, if Allah wills, in: 'with your silver this' [Al-Kahf: 19]; in 'Al-Kahf.'
