Commentary
Then he began to explain the greatness of this glorification; coupled with the description of perfection. He said (glorified and exalted is He): ﴿They glorify﴾; meaning: they perform the greatest glorification; ﴿for Him﴾; meaning: the greatest God; whose description has previously been mentioned with majesty and honor specifically; ﴿the seven heavens﴾; all of them; ﴿and the earth﴾; also; ﴿and whoever is in them﴾; from those with intellect; ﴿And if﴾; meaning: and what; and he emphasized the negation; so He said (glorified and exalted is He): ﴿from anything﴾; meaning: possessing intellect; and otherwise; ﴿except that they glorify﴾; meaning: they glorify for Him; being adorned ﴿with His praise﴾; meaning: by describing Him with what He has of attributes of perfection; with what He (glorified and exalted is He) has in that thing from the signs indicating (p-424) both negation; and affirmation; and this is glorification by the tongue of speech; from whom it is valid; and by the tongue of state from him and from others; "As the wall said to the peg: Why do you split me? He said: Ask the one who drives me in." And it is glorification from various aspects; for the knowledgeable to hear it with the hearing of understanding; and the clarity of mind; from the aspect of its essence in its creation; then in the meaning of its attribute; by its need from the aspect of its occurrence to a Creator who brought it into existence; ancient; not created; and from the aspect of its perfection to Him being a wise planner; and from the aspect of its perishability to Him - despite that - being able and choosing; overpowering and mighty.. to other than that; contrary to if the glorification were limited to the tongue of speech; it would be of one type; and he clarified the guide to that by His saying (glorified and exalted is He): ﴿But you do not understand﴾; without "you hear"; ﴿their glorification﴾; due to your turning away from contemplation; and your aversion to hearing the mention; which is the greatest of its causes; while this is only in relation to the generality of creation; but as for the special ones, they hear the glorification of inanimate objects; Al-Bukhari narrated "from Abdullah - may Allah be pleased with him - he said: We used to count the signs as blessings; and you count them as threats; we were with the Messenger of Allah - blessings and peace be upon him - on a journey; and the water became scarce; so he said: 'Seek a little water'; so they brought a container with little water; so he put his hand in the container; and said: (p-425) 'Come to the blessed purification; and the blessing from Allah'; for I saw the water gushing from between the fingers of the Messenger of Allah - blessings and peace be upon him; and he was honored; and respected; and revered; and always magnified -; and we used to hear the glorification of the food while it was being eaten;" and the glorification of the pebbles is well-known; and in the Psalms of David - peace be upon him - there is much repetition of this verse; and an encouragement to contemplate it; he said in Psalm sixty-eight: (The heavens and the earth and the seas glorify Him; and all that moves in them); and in Psalm eighty-five: (There is none like You, O my Lord and God; nor like Your works; for all the nations that You created come and prostrate before You, O Lord; and they glorify Your name; for You are great; the Creator of signs); and in eighty-seven: (By Your mighty arm, You separated Your enemies; to You belong the heavens; and to You belongs the earth; You established the world with its perfection; You created the land and the sea; Tabur and Hermon glorify in Your name; to You belongs strength and might; Your hand is exalted; and Your right hand is elevated; with justice and judgment, You perfected Your throne; mercy and justice go before You; blessed is the people who knows (p-426) Your glorification); and in ninety-five: (Glorify the Lord with a new glorification; all the earth glorifies the Lord; prostrate to the Lord in the sanctuaries of His holiness; for all the earth trembles before Him; say among the nations: Indeed, Allah is the King; He perfected the world so that it does not perish; He judges among the nations with justice; the heavens rejoice; and the earth is glad; the sea turns in its depth; the regions and what is in them rejoice; there all the trees of the forests glorify before the Lord); and in ninety-seven: (And to Allah belongs the glorification of all the earth; glorify; and praise; and glorify the Lord); and in the one hundred and forty-eighth: (Glorify the Lord from the heavens; glorify Him from the heights; O all His angels; and all His hosts glorify Him; the sun and the moon glorify Him; and all the stars; and the light; glorify Him; the heavens of this world glorify the Lord; and the waters above the heavens; all glorify the name of the Lord; for He said; and it was; and He commanded; and they were created; and He established them forever and ever; He set for them a measure that they do not exceed; the Lord is glorified by whoever is on the earth; the dragons; (p-427) and all depths; the fire; and hail; and snow; and ice; and the mighty wind; His word made the mountains and all hills; the fruitful trees; and all the cedars; the wild beasts; and all the cattle; and all creatures; and every bird with wings; the kings of the earth; and all the great nations; and all the rulers of the earth; the young men; and the maidens; and the elders; and the children; glorify the name of the Lord; for His name alone is exalted); and in the one hundred and fifty-fifth: (Glorify Allah in all His sanctuaries; glorify Him in the strength of His might; glorify Him like His glory; glorify Him with the greatness of His majesty; glorify Him with the sound of the trumpet; and glorify Him with loud voices; every soul glorifies the Lord).
And when the glorification of all creatures is a matter that is clear in understanding and evident in its nature, they are deserving of punishment for not understanding it. This is due to their failure to reflect on the creations as they should. He alerted them that their well-being is only due to His forbearance towards them. He gives them respite for the duration He has set for them, because He does not hasten due to His purity from the blemishes of deficiency, which everything proclaims His purity from. He said (the Exalted): "Indeed, He was forbearing," where He does not hasten to punish you for your turning away from directing your thoughts towards what He commanded you to direct them to Him.
And when it is common for the state of humans that their forbearing one, when angry, does not forgive; and if he pardons, his pardon is tainted, He said (the Exalted): "Forgiving," indicating by the form of exaggeration that He is other than that, encouraging repentance.
