Commentary
And when arrogance and pride are the greatest obstacles to knowledge that calls to all good; and a disease with the disease of ignorance; carrying one to all evil; Allah, glorified and exalted is He, said: "And do not walk"; meaning: in any manner; and He affirmed the meaning by saying: "on the earth"; meaning: its kind; "in a state of boastfulness"; which is intense joy that necessitates arrogance; because that is from the foolishness of the soul due to the impulsiveness of desire; and the call of lust; and what it is naturally inclined to of deficiencies; for it is not proper except after reaching all the hopes that are attained through diligence; and that will not be for any creature; and for this reason, He explained it by saying: "Indeed, you will not pierce"; meaning: even in the slightest ways; "the earth"; meaning: cut through it by walking from your place to its edge; "and you will not reach"; meaning: in any way; "the mountains in height"; meaning: the height of all the mountains; by walking in them; so if you are unable in your ability; and your knowledge to draw a straight line across the width of the earth; (p-416) with diligence and effort; and from being arrogant towards its pillars, then what do you boast about? And with what do you act arrogantly until you strut?
