Commentary
And when He commanded what is preferable in the case of having, He commanded similarly in the case of not having. He said - affirming; as a warning that it should be that turning away from them is in the realm of distancing and rejection -: "And if you turn away from them"; meaning: from all those who preceded; from whom you were commanded to give; for a matter that compelled you to that; you must do so; because you do not find what to give them; so you turned away out of modesty; not with the intention of withholding; but "seeking"; meaning: seeking "mercy"; meaning: honor; and abundance; "from your Lord"; the Most Generous; "that you hope for"; so if it comes to you, you would support them in it; "then say to them"; in the case of turning away; "a kind word"; meaning: one that is easy; that opens their hearts; and expands their hope; because that is closer to the path of the righteous; the doers of good; those I am with. Abu Hayyan said: It has been narrated that he - blessings and peace be upon him - after the revelation of this verse, if he did not have what to give; and was asked; he would say: "May Allah provide us and you from His bounty." That is the end.
And he placed here seeking in the position of need; because it is its cause; so he placed the caused in the position of the cause.
