And when He urged kindness towards them in particular, He generalized the command for every relative and others. He said (the Most High): ﴿And give to the near relative﴾; from the side of the father or the mother, even if they are distant; 'his right' and 'the poor'; even if he is not close; ﴿and the traveler﴾; which is the traveler who is cut off from his wealth; so that you may be one who is cautious and doing good.

And when He encouraged generosity, and the soul rarely acts in moderation between extravagance and negligence, He followed that with His saying (the Most High): ﴿And do not waste﴾; by dispersing wealth wastefully; which is giving it in what is not appropriate; and in His saying: ﴿wastefully﴾; there is a warning that rising towards the realm of wastefulness is better than descending into the narrowness of stinginess and miserliness; and 'wastefulness' is the extension of the hand in wealth according to whims randomly; whereas generosity is in a known measure; because it is following Allah's command in financial rights; and some of it is known according to the amount; and some of it is known according to the description; such as supporting the people of the faith, and thanking those who have done good to you; and similar to that. Ibn Mas'ud - may Allah be pleased with him - was asked about wastefulness; and he said: Spending wealth without its right; and from Mujahid - may Allah be pleased with him -: If a person spent all his wealth in the truth, it would not be wastefulness; and if he spent a little in falsehood, it would be wastefulness.
