Commentary
Then He commanded to reflect on this gift of His; in a way that encourages towards the Hereafter; and dissuades from the worldly life. He said (glorified and exalted is He) - commanding to take heed -: "Look"; and clarified that their state, due to its strangeness, is worthy of being asked about; He said (glorified and exalted is He): "How We have favored"; meaning: by what We possess of overwhelming greatness; "some of them over others"; in this worldly life by the provision; so the favored one makes use of the less favored; and the less favored desires to serve the favored; and he seeks honor by drawing near to him; while Allah's provision - which is His gift - in relation to all; is equal in measure; He created what exists in this world for the righteous; and the wicked; and all are eager to take more than their sufficiency from the provisions which are more than them; so this preference was nothing but by the compulsion of a capable One who overpowered them to that; and He is the One who is free from deficiency; and possesses all perfection; thus He deserves that the desire of any desirer be directed only to Him.
And when He alerted that what we see of preference is solely by His pure power; He informed that what comes after death is all like that; without distinction; He said: "And the Hereafter"; He confirmed the information about what is in it; which necessitates the affirmation of the knowledge of its existence due to their denial of it; "greater degrees"; than this worldly life; "and greater preference"; firstly with Paradise; and Hell; their very selves; and secondly with the degrees in Paradise; and the levels in Hell; and since knowledge here is constrained by sins; it was mentioned after the preference in this world; and perhaps in that is an indication that most of those who are increased in this world, their increase will be a decrease in their Hereafter; due to a sin they have acquired; or a shortcoming they have committed; and since the knowledge in what comes; in His saying (glorified and exalted is He): "And your Lord knows best" [Al-Isra: 55]; is absolute; He concealed thereafter the vices; and turned to that which was concealed, the virtues; He said (glorified and exalted is He): "And We have certainly favored some of the prophets over others" [Al-Isra: 55]; the verse; so whoever has a noble soul; and a lofty ambition; it is upon him to renounce a fleeting elevation; for the sake of the everlasting elevation.
