Commentary
And when he mentioned the ignorant, he mentioned the knowledgeable and the one who acts. So Allah, the Most High, said: ﴿And whoever desires the Hereafter﴾; meaning: an absolute desire - as indicated by the abstraction from 'was'; ﴿and strives﴾; meaning: and he combined with his intention the action by striving; ﴿for it is his striving﴾; meaning: that which is for it; and it is what it is worthy of from the action that pleases Allah; by what He has legislated in His Book; and the Sunnah of His Messenger - blessings and peace be upon him -; not any striving that was not witnessed by the apparent of the Book and the Sunnah; indicating that intention does not benefit except with action; either by deed when able; or by strength when unable. Then he mentioned the condition of striving that is not accepted except by it; and he said: ﴿and he is a believer﴾; meaning: firmly established in this description; as it has come from some of the predecessors: whoever does not have three, his action will not benefit him: a firm faith; a sincere intention; and an accurate action; and he recited this verse; and this firmness is the excellence that the purpose of the Surah revolves around. Then he arranged the reward upon it; and he said: ﴿So they are﴾; meaning: of high rank; for their gathering of the three conditions; ﴿their striving is accepted﴾; meaning: accepted; rewarded with multiplication; while some of them we open for him the doors of this world; like Dawud and Sulayman - blessings and peace be upon them - and we employ him in it with what he loves; and some of them we withhold from him; as a honor for him; not out of disgrace; for the result is that if it is found with the friend, it does not honor him; and if it is absent from him, it does not belittle him; rather, honor and otherwise are with Allah through actions.
