Tafsir for verse: 17:12
12We have made the night and the day two signs, then We made the sign of night marked by darkness and the sign of day bright, so that you may seek grace from your Lord, and that you may know how to number the years and how to compute, and We have expounded everything in detail.

Commentary

And when it was established what pertains to His attribute (glorified and exalted is He) of exaltation; and to the attribute of man of lowliness; He followed it with what pertains to His actions (glorified and exalted is He) of perfection; mentioning what is the most upright of the evidences of monotheism and prophethood in the two worlds; the higher and the lower; then what pertains to the actions of man of deviation; running in accordance with his nature; or of goodness by the success of the Kind Bestower; He said (glorified and exalted is He) - clarifying what He granted them of the blessings of this world; after He had bestowed upon them of the blessings of religion -: "And We made"; meaning: by virtue of Our greatness; "the night and the day two signs"; two indicators of the completeness of knowledge; and the comprehensiveness of power; the sign of the night is like the ambiguous verses; and the sign of the day is like the definitive verses; just as the intended purpose of the obligation cannot be completed except by mentioning the definitive and the ambiguous; so likewise, time cannot be utilized except by these two signs; "So We erased" (p-385) meaning: by Our magnificent greatness; "the sign of the night"; by the removal of light; so We made it so that the visible things cannot be seen by it; just as the book cannot be seen when it is erased; "And We made"; meaning: by Our greatness; "the sign of the day"; and when it was in the utmost brightness, everyone who has sight can see by it; He attributed sight to it in exaggeration; so He said: "seeing"; meaning: by the sun; which He made illuminating in itself; and this deficient abode continues in transition from light to darkness; and from darkness to light; just as for man - by the haste which his nature calls him to; and the deliberation which his mind calls him to - from transition from deficiency to perfection; and from perfection to deficiency; just as the moon - which is lesser than the sun - likewise; then He mentioned some of the benefits resulting from that; so He said (glorified and exalted is He): "So that you may seek"; meaning: you seek with great intensity; "bounty from your Lord"; meaning: the One who is gracious to you in both of them; with the light of this at one time; and with the coolness of this at another; "And so that you may know"; by distinguishing this from that; "the number of years"; meaning: without the need for calculation; because the two luminous bodies indicate the transition of the year merely by their movement.

And when they also indicate the calculation of the risings and settings; and increase and decrease; and other than that from the existents; for whoever reflects deeply; and engages in thought; (p-386) He said (the Most High): ﴿and the calculation﴾; meaning: its type; We have detailed them for that in this precise manner; with increase and decrease; and the change of conditions at known times; in a system that does not falter over the long duration of time by the measure of an atom; nor does the hair's breadth dissolve until Allah wills the destruction of the world; and the annihilation of creation; so He would eliminate all of that in the quickest time; and the nearest period; and were it not for their difference, the times would have mixed; and the matters would have been disrupted; ﴿and everything﴾; other than them; from what you need in your religion; or your worldly affairs; ﴿We have detailed it﴾; meaning: by Our greatness; and We have removed its obscurity; and affirmed the matter as a reminder of the completeness of power; and that nothing He intends is beyond His ability; so He said (the Most High): ﴿in detail﴾; so look with your eyes; and your insights; and follow in your public matters; and your private matters; you will find a precise matter; and a firm system: ﴿Then return your sight twice; it will turn back to you humbled while it is fatigued﴾ [Al-Mulk: 4]
