Commentary

And when the matter of the gathering was established; by affirming the ability over every possible thing at times; and by informing the Children of Israel; who obligated themselves to accept their words; and cutting the paths to them to ask Him about some other matters; it was established that this Quran, which informs of that, is true; and they had asked Him about the mentioned issues; so He answered them about the first of them; which is the soul; with a general matter; and He followed it by saying that they asked Him for things they proposed; and they said: We will not believe you until you do them; and He indicated (glorified and exalted is He) by informing about the signs of Musa - peace be upon him - that He did not leave their question unanswered out of stinginess; nor out of inability; for it is of the kind of what they asked regarding the manipulation of waters; sometimes by bringing it down; and sometimes by turning it into blood; which necessitates the ability to cause trees to grow with it; and from the dropping of the sky in pieces; by dropping the destructive hail; thus it was established by that the correctness of the information about the manipulation of examples in this book; so He referred to His saying: 'And certainly We have manipulated'; His saying (glorified and exalted is He): 'And with the truth'; meaning: from the established meanings in which there is no doubt; not with anything else; 'We sent it down'; We; the Quran; or this which He informed of; about the gathering for the Children of Israel surrounded by the Egyptians; and with what preceded it; regarding what we have of greatness; 'And with the truth'; not with anything else; 'It was sent down'; it is; and it reached them on your tongue; after sending it down upon you; just as We sent down; equally; fresh and preserved; nothing has occurred upon it that is foreign; so there is nothing in it of distortion; nor alteration; as occurred in the book of the Jews; whom your people ask; and this indicates that the Quran is miraculous by its being - along with its miraculousness - in eloquence in the manipulation of examples; and other systems of speech; 'And We did not send you'; meaning: with what we have of greatness; 'except as a giver of good news and a warner'; to the utmost ability in each of the two descriptions - as indicated by the conjunction and the structure -; conveying to them what is in it of good news for whoever believes in that day; and a warning for whoever does not believe in it; so if they accept, then it is their share; and if they do not accept, then upon them is their burden; and there is no blame upon you; for indeed We did not send you as a guardian over them; and We will surely cause their falsehood to perish with this truth; without a doubt; so do not hasten for them; 'Indeed, falsehood was bound to perish'; and We did not send you to cause rivers to burst forth; nor to cause trees to grow.
