Commentary
'And We said'; meaning: by virtue of the greatness that nothing can surpass. When this saying was not exhaustive of the time after, He affirmed the conjunction; so He said (the Exalted): 'After him'; meaning: after the drowning; 'for the Children of Israel'; those who were under his hand, more humiliated than slaves, due to their piety and their goodness; 'Dwell in the land'; meaning: the entirety of the land; indicating that Pharaoh wanted to erase them from the land; or that their dwelling with his existence was as if it were non-existent, due to the humiliation upon them; and the land that he intended to expel them from; which is the land of Egypt; meaning: be where you dwell in it; no one has authority over you; nor is there any barrier to what you desire from it; just as Pharaoh and his soldiers were; if you wish; possessing it after you were slaves who endured the worst of torment; 'Then when the time of the Hereafter comes'; meaning: the Day of Resurrection; after you have lived in the land; and you have been buried in it as the dead; 'We will come'; meaning: by virtue of our greatness; 'with you'; from it; 'in droves'; meaning: We have resurrected you and them mixed together; no one has authority over another; nor can anyone repel another; in a state different from that which existed in this world; then We distinguished some of you from others; and We honored the good among you by humiliating the vile. If the Children of Israel were to ask - those whom these ignorant polytheists accept their words; and seek their counsel in their affairs - about that which We have recited to you; they would inform of it; just as We have informed you; so that the matter of the Hereafter would then be established among them; otherwise, their acceptance of some of their words; without others; without evidence; would be arbitrary; and a preference without any basis.
