Commentary
And when He, glorified and exalted is He, established that most people denied the signs; due to His judgment of their misguidance; and whoever judges by their misguidance cannot be guided; and He concluded that whoever is created with something does not cease from it; He began to console His Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, with what happened to those before him from his brothers, the prophets; along with the indication that He grants the signs according to the necessities; and that the extraordinary occurrences do not benefit the faith of one who has judged him with misguidance; and it necessitates - as in the tradition of Allah - the destruction of whoever disobeys after that with the punishment of eradication; so He said - adding to His saying: "And certainly We have diversified for the people" [Al-Isra: 89] -: "And certainly We have given"; meaning: with what We have of greatness; "Musa"; the son of Imran; the pious; the good-doer - peace be upon him -; when We sent him to Fir'aun; "nine clear signs"; and they are - as in the Torah -: the staff; then the blood; then the frogs; then the lice; then the death of the livestock; then the great hail which Allah sent with the raging fire; and it would destroy everything it passed over; from vegetation; and animals; then the locusts; then the darkness; then the death of the firstborn of the humans; and all the animals - as this has been mentioned in this book from the Torah; in the Surah of 'Al-A'raf'; and it seems that he counted the hand with the staff as a sign; and did not single out the hand; because it does not harm them; and I have composed it to make it easy to memorize; so I said:
A staff, lice, death of livestock, darkness Locusts, blood, then frogs and hail
And death of the firstborn of humans and others From the living, it came to them, the Mighty and Unique.
And it is summarized in the Psalms; for he said - in Psalm seventy and seventy-one -: (He made His signs and wonders in the land of [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: Sa'aan]; and He made their rivers blood; and their ponds; so that they would not drink water; He sent upon them the creatures; and the flies of dogs; so the frogs ate them; and He corrupted them; He fed them lice instead of their fruits; and the locusts devoured them; He broke their vines with hail; and their barley with frost; He surrendered their livestock to the hail; and their wealth to the fire; He sent upon them the severity of His wrath; anger; and fury; He sent the angels of evil; and opened the paths of His wrath; and did not save their souls from death; (p-524) He surrendered their livestock to death; He killed all the firstborn of Egypt; and their firstborn; in the dwellings of [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: Ham]) ; And he said - in the psalm four hundred after one hundred; after mentioning the works of Allah among the Children of Israel; and their forefathers -: (He sent hunger upon the earth; He destroyed the crops of their land; He sent before them a man; Joseph was sold into slavery; and they bound his feet with chains; his soul was in iron; until his word came; and the saying of the Lord tested him; He sent the king and released him; and made him a ruler over his people; and established him as a lord over his children; and his authority over all that he had; to teach his nobles as himself; and to instruct his elders; Israel entered Egypt; and Jacob sojourned in the land of [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: Ham]; and his people increased greatly; and he rose above his enemies; and He turned his heart to hate his people; and to deal treacherously with His servants; He sent Moses His servant; and Aaron His chosen one; and they performed His signs and wonders in the land of [UNTRANSLATED-LATIN: Ham]; He sent darkness; and it became night; and they angered His words; so He turned their waters into blood; and killed their fish; and their land was filled with frogs in the palaces of their kings; He commanded the creatures and they came; and the flies of dogs; and lice in all their borders; He made their rains hail; and fire burned in their land; He struck their vines; and their barley; and broke the trees of their borders; He permitted the locusts and they came; and countless flies ate all the grass of the land; and its fruits; and killed all the firstborn of Egypt; and the first child born to them); except that he did not mention the staff; and it seems that this is due to its fame (p-525) very much among them; and because all the signs were with it; for it is in truth the comprehensive sign for all; and I only said: that these signs; because the context indicates that Pharaoh saw them all; and he persisted after seeing them; and this is an indication that if he had given the disbelievers of Quraysh what they proposed; from the springing forth of the fountain; and what was with it; it would not have stopped them from their obstinacy; for bringing it forth is futile and has no benefit.
And when the Jews who commanded Quraysh to ask the Prophet - blessings and peace be upon him - about the soul; the answer to which has passed - as in some narrations -; and about the People of the Cave; and Dhul-Qarnayn; the explanation of their stories will come in 'Al-Kahf'; they alerted them to their question - if they would accept their words - about the matter of Musa - peace be upon him - in that he is like this noble Prophet; in that he is a human; while being a Messenger; and in that he brought forth miracles; so the obstinate denied them; thus the denier was uprooted; and He said (the Exalted): 'So ask'; meaning: O greatest of our creation; 'Bani Isra'il'; meaning: generally; those who alerted Quraysh about the matter of the soul; about the words of Musa - peace be upon him -; or the believers; like Abdullah ibn Salam; and his companions; 'when'; meaning: about that; when 'they came to them'; meaning: their forefathers came to them; so he faced from the denial after the manifestation of the clear miracles what you faced; and he was not denied due to a flaw in his matter; nor due to the strength of his enemy; in repelling the punishment; but rather it was ignorance and obstinacy; so that would be a source of consolation for you; and knowledge of the wickedness of their natures; and a decisive proof against them; 'So he said'; meaning: so he went to Fir'aun; and commanded him to send them with him; but he refused; so he showed him the signs; one after another; and as a result of that, the opposite of what the situation necessitated occurred; and he said to him 'Fir'aun'; defiantly; and arrogantly; 'Indeed, I think you'; he confirmed his saying for what Musa - peace be upon him - showed that necessitates submission to him; and belief; and denial that anyone could deny him; 'O Musa, you are surely bewitched'; meaning: so everything that arises from you is from the effects of the magic that is upon you; it is an illusion with no reality to it; and you are in reality bewitched; and for the existence of magic upon you, there is a magician; Abu Ubaidah said: just as it is said: 'Maymun' meaning 'Yamin'; and as if he confused his soldiers; when he showed them the sign of the hand; with this suspicion; and this is as Quraysh said: 'You follow nothing but a man bewitched' [Al-Isra: 47] and they said - in another place -: a magician; for they perhaps used the name of the passive participle intending the active participle; exaggerating that he is like one compelled to act; and in the matter of asking the Jews is an indication of their misguidance; Sheikh Wali al-Din al-Malawi said: and perhaps from this is the borrowing of the imams; in debating; demanding the Jews and Christians; and those like them; to prove the prophethood of their prophets; so every path they take is taken similarly in affirming the prophethood of Muhammad - blessings and peace be upon him -; and every objection they raise is raised against them similarly; and what was an answer for them is an answer for us; and whoever reflects on the noble verse sees in it the wonder in that; it has ended; and Fir'aun did not believe; despite the abundance of those signs; and their greatness;.
