قُل لَّوۡ أَنتُمۡ تَمۡلِكُونَ خَزَآئِنَ رَحۡمَةِ رَبِّيٓ إِذٗا لَّأَمۡسَكۡتُمۡ خَشۡيَةَ ٱلۡإِنفَاقِۚ وَكَانَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ قَتُورٗا ١٠٠ ﴿100

And when it was stated in this surah that He is the Giver; and that His abundant giving - which surpasses limitation; and is beyond need; and serves as proof of His complete power; and perfect knowledge - is not restricted from anyone; and that they kill their children; despite this; out of fear of poverty; while they seek for themselves to be shown from the kind of what He created of springs; and gardens; and gold; and adornments; in specific ways; without the need for what has been previously mentioned; and they have refrained out of stinginess; and pride; and ignorance from acknowledging Him for what He has made obligatory upon them; gratitude for His blessings; and warding off His wrath; after the evidence has been established; and the doubts have been removed; so they are not more stingy than them; for they have been stingy with what is obligatory upon them in words; as the Prophet - blessings and peace be upon him - said: 'The stingiest of people is the one who is stingy with greetings'; He commanded him to alert them to their foolishness in that; by His saying (the Exalted): 'Say, if...'; and when it is a right of 'if' to enter upon actions; it is known that after it there is an action of the same kind as what follows; its estimation is: 'You possess'; but He omitted it; and separated the pronoun; because the intended judgment upon them is at the very beginning; so He said (the Exalted): 'You'; meaning: without others; 'You possess the treasures'; He expressed it in the form of the ultimate plural; because the situation is worthy of exaggeration; 'of mercy'; meaning: provision; and honor; 'of my Lord'; the One who has done good to me by granting me all that has established my affair; and clarified it; and it is His powers by which He shows mercy to His servants; by adding them to them; 'Then you would have withheld'; meaning: there would have occurred from you withholding from spending in some of the ways that you need; 'out of fear'; of the consequence of 'spending'; meaning: that which leads to poverty; then He inferred the correctness of this assumption from the observable in the meaning of His saying (the Exalted): 'And man was'; meaning: by nature and disposition; 'stingy'; meaning: extremely stingy; due to the possibility that he may become poor; so you do not see him except being tightfisted in spending on himself; and on whom he is obligated to spend; severely in that; even if his conditions have expanded; and his wealth has increased beyond the limit; due to what is in him of the necessary quality of deficiency by virtue of his need for it; he is predisposed to that; so he is by nature strong in it; all of them do it; except for whom Allah (the Exalted) has granted success; so his intellect has prevailed over his desires; and few are they; meaning: So if this is your matter regarding what you possess; with the need for the ways in which to spend; how do you ask the Prophet - blessings and peace be upon him - for what he does not possess; nor claims the ability to do; or from the Wise Creator to do what you are being obstinate about; without any need at all?! For if it is to establish His ability, then you do not doubt it; and if it is to establish the message of your Prophet; it has been established by matters - the greatest of which is this Qur'an which has just passed - the establishment of evidence upon it by it; and the tearing down of the veils of your doubts in distancing the possibility of the Messenger being human; and Allah (the Exalted) has honored you with your Prophet from hastening against you with destruction at the time of disobedience; after the unveiling of the cover; as His custom has been with all nations; and if it is to establish your wealth, then it is something that does not suffice your souls; so it turns them away from seeking more; and from being stingy; due to what you have been predisposed to; rather you would be at the time of that being for you; for the attainment of wealth; like one seeking refuge from the heat in the fire; and He has decreed that His affair will prevail over all who oppose it; even if the disbelievers dislike it; and He has known who believes; so He makes faith easy for him; and makes it a support for the party of the Most Merciful; and whoever does not believe, He makes him among the allies of Satan; and causes all to taste humiliation; and makes them fuel for the fires; so after all of this, in your response to your obstinacy, there remains nothing but frivolity; which is - glorified is He - above it; so there is no way for a person to attain wealth except by following the Sunnah; and detaching from desires; so whoever reaches that, gold and pebbles are equal to him.
